I actually really enjoy doing WIP threads, they just seem so much more interactive.

So here's what I did on Saturday (among other things)

Start out with a sketch to keep me on track.

    Getting the point hammered in
    [IMG]

I really like my newish anvil, a 200Lb Chuck Robinson
    [IMG]

    Crank it up baby
    [IMG]

Getting the Distal taper worked in
    [IMG]

My lovely wife grabbed a picture of me starting the Tang
    [IMG]

    To get this...

Getting into the bevels now, this is the fun part
    [IMG]

Cause it starts to look like a knife
    [IMG]

Three normalizing heats to get all the carbides happy
    [IMG]

A FRESH 36g Blaze puts the bevels in quick (and takes skin off even quicker, be careful)

Satanite clay applied and baked on for the HT
    [IMG]

Running the forge down LOW (we don't wanna overheat it, slow is better)

Quenching into my Parks #50, those flare ups are fun when you first go into the oil.

And a quick polish to see if the Hamon is what we wanted, I'm happy with it.

very similar in design to your JD raffle knife.....which is a very good thing as i loved that raffle knife......

this knife looks a bit better though......this one seems to have a slightly wider blade with a more compact overall profile.......

Start out with a new 36g belt and get all the geometry where we want it

    Much better

Layout and clamp a file guide for the False Edge

Cut in the shoulders with a chainsaw file

grind up to the layout lines

We've polished up to 600g on the grinder, I stop polishing here and fit the guard and etch my mark.

Guard is all fit up now

A couple hours later we've polished up to 2000g and etched the Hamon

    And the other side

Great looking blade and excellent thread.

One question is how does the file guide work? I'm a complete novice when it comes to that tool.

It's a hardened piece of O1 with a precision fit pin to keep them aligned, and a Allen head bolt on each side to clamp it to the blade.

you line it up with the mark you want to file to and clamp it down good and tight then just file right up to it.

I got that one from Tracy Mickley

Sorry, not a whole lot done last night.
I've been fighting a bit of a stomach bug. :pissedevil::pissedevil::pissedevil:

Anyways, I did get some work done.

First we have to pick an appropriate piece of stag
I want to use the one on the left and Ren agreed so we are off to the races

First drill holes through the Pith all the way through the handle piece
You can see here also the tool I use to scrape out the channel for the tang.
It's just an old file that I annealed and cut up into the shape you see, then rehardened.
Also note the sharpie layout lines that keep me in line with the stag, VERY important.

Here we've got our channel pretty well cut. I'm about dead ATM so we'll pick this up again tonight.

Feeling much much better now, thanks

Sooooo, picking up where we left off yesterday.

first we layout and cut for the Sub-Guard

Here I am laying out the slot onto the guard stock (1/4 x 1 - 416SS)

Looking good, but probably a little bigger than we want it

    That's the ticket

Threaded rod brazed into the tang (I cut out a slot w/ my bandsaw)

Hmmm, seems we have a gap here when we screw things down tight

    That's much better
