    Pssst CR...?

Most Aussies don't want to live in the US.

And it has nothing to do with our animal wildlife here...

Well, let 'em start their own thread! :bwah:

This is all done tongue-in-cheek. I have nothing against Australia and would love to visit some day. I actually LIKE spiders, snakes, lizards, etc. Some people (INCLUDING my mother!) consider me strange because of it, butt*....

I saw a little alligator in Mr. Turtle's canal. Doesn't meet Aussie standards, it is only about 2 ft long. But this thread was getting way too scary so here's a pic of our little alligator.

He's cute too! I'm sure you remember when you could buy baby alligators at the 5 and dime store? :shakie:

My parents showed VERY good sense and never let me get one! Now, turtles were a different story.... :bwah:

I DO remember baby alligators - and little painted turtles and budgies at the 5 and dime.

Little canal alligator is small now but not for long probably. And local ladies walk these tiny 3-8 lb dogs by the water so I told them to be careful ...

And do you want to know another thing about "little canal alligator"...?

There's a 100% chance there's at least 2 more much bigger alligators nearby...

They stay with their parents? I know nothing about alligators. That's interesting. When a big alligator appears in this stretch of water the neighbors report it and it is removed. You don't think the little one just wandered in by itself? I've lived here 3 years and I've never seen any size alligator until now. I just read a Florida government 'fact sheet' and you're right, it sez little alligators stay near their mommy. I guess I'll start looking for Mommy. And the males stay also? That's weird. lol Do alligators mate for life?

Nope, usually just a few minutes! :madaddy:

Generally, a large bull will claim a section as his territory and mate with any females that happen to be there.

Mom, will guard the eggs, help babies to the water, and stay around with the young for a while, usually a few months to occasionally a year or so. I suspect that a 2 footer would be old enough to be on its own, but keep an eye out, just in case.

Baby gators is cute critters! Mom and Dad... not so much.

Growing up in S Florida in the '50's and 60's, I remember a virtual truism.
Dig a hole and you'll hit fresh water at ~4 feet. Dig a little deeper and you'll hit salt water at ~ 8 feet.
The fresh sits atop the heavier salt water.

Leave it for a few weeks and you'll find small minnows swimming in the hole.
Come back in a few months and you'll find an alligator in the hole.

Come back in a few years and you'll find a gated golf course built around the hole, with advertised "waterfront housing" crowding around it,
    and the 'gator relocated...
