    'Waelcyrie South' & 'Waelcyrie North'

It's that time of the year again for another unusual work in progress. This one is in leatherwork because is it a collaboration and my part is the handles and sheathes.

Because I like to do new things, I am taking a break from folders and doing a pair of daggers instead.

For those of you who are interested in where the start of stuff comes from, this is for you. Everyone else can skip to the pictures!

The inspiration for 'Waelcyrie South' and 'Waelcyrie North' came from one of my favourite poems, Darraoarljoo, where the Valkyrie anticipate the fall of the Irish Brian Boru to the Vikings in 1014...and in particular the first and last verses.

    Blood rains from cloudy web
On the broad loom of slaughter.
The web of man grey as armour
Is now being woven; the Valkyries
Will cross it with a crimson weft.

...And then they tore the woven
    cloth from the loom and
    ripped it to pieces, each
keeping the shred she held in
    her hands...The women
    mounted their horses and rode
away, six to the south and six
    to the north.

Ok, enough of such stuff! These are going to be daggers strapped into soft glove leather corsets with seraphinite (Angelwing) stones on the pommels.

Here are some drawings from my sketch book.

I've started doing some rough models...trying out ideas and seeing if bits will work together. There is a turned wooden structure onto which everything fits.

...and then, this week, the beautiful blades arrive! This is the first collaborative project that I have done so I'm rather nervous but I have wanted to do a joint project with my friend Guy Stainthorp* for years...he makes such lovely knives and so very different to mine.

The first thing was to mask off the surface and register where all the grind transitions were so that I could start checking the design would work on the actual blades. Such neat grinding! I photocopy them, too, so that I can draw on exact paper replicas.

The next job is to turn the timber support handles and the sheathes. I'm hoping to do that on Tuesday...I've already had one go but that resulted in an shower of timber fragments and some rather startled nearby students!

    Beautifully artistic work.

Am I the only one who sees a clitoris on the handle?

It still needs playing with (snigger) - I might decide it's too brazen when I make the final piece...

Oh, Sandy! I was telling Miranda that I suspected that I was pushing my leather working skills to their limits on this one. With the wisdom of a 12 yr old, she said...

"...I don't think that your imagination will accept that as an excuse for failure..."

That just proves that great minds DO think alike. :bwah:

Grace, your Waelcyrie project reminds me of Jean-Marc Laroche's work, which also combines knives with themes of eroticism and ladies' undergarments.

Thanks for the pictures! I hadn't seen Jean-Marc's work before.

I'll tell you what...If I get the knife finished in plenty of time, I'll make a matching corset and do my own version of Dita's picture. :bwah:
