Jerry and i met at the janesville WI show last spring and im happy to do a WIP for him and you

    the steel is 1084

first thing i have to draw out the tang

its still a little short but when i hammer in the guard it will be about 4 1/2 inches

i saw cut in the step so its good and square

    then i start forging

takes about 3 heats to get it where i want it

and forged to shape and normalized

along with the rest of the orders :)

tomorrow ill grind and do the HT

Is that HTing oven a Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven? Do you use the 'toast' settings or strictly the 'oven' settings? Things are shaping up quite nicely, Lon!

Hammer&fire...how much more caveman does it get!! I'm with ya on the maple. I have some cherry around that size, harvested from the land I hunt...? Next time!?!

This step as fun for you as bangin metal? Probably a little more relaxing anyways

should be done tomorrow the gluing and pinning is the most time consuming step...i have to let the glue dry twice!!!. and there is 10 knives in this batch :)

tomorrow ill sand and polish the handle then i have to seal it in the toung oil and linseed oil

...and messy too. I hate epoxy, a necessary evil though!

Doesn't take all that long then does it? Kind of expected this to go on for a few weeks.

I can take all of the precautions in the world and I still always manage to get epoxy all over the damn place.

i got a question for you Lon. you hammer the blade and tang. so its got hammer marks. how do you Lon the man get the handle material and tang flat enough to mate up?

do you hammer the handle material to match the tang? if you do then you gots some high skills.

no really how do you get it to mate up?
