Raccoons are so damn smart. When I was still on the farm I had cat food in a 50 gallon steel drum and raccoons lifted the lid and ate the food. I put a cinder block on the lid and they came back and removed the cinder block. I fastened a bungee cord over the lid and they removed that. I'd buy 80 lb bags of food - the cats in the barn were feral and I couldn't catch them all to have them fixed so there would be kittens and at the time the raccoons found the food I had at least 14 cats eating in the barn ... & I was pissed off at all the thieving. So, I made sure the lid was tight, then I put the bungee cord on and fastened it inside of two cinder blocks. The next morning the food was intact but the raccoons had pissed all over it. They also used to drink a whole container of hummingbird nectar and then they'd shit everywhere. I had to start taking the nectar in at night.

My mom lives in town but has a LARGE raccoon that hangs around her house. She leaves table scraps out for him and his buddy the 'possum.

I was leaving her house back in the spring and saw a whole family of raccoons standing in the road near the creek at the bottom of the hill. Last night, I saw a Sharp-Shinned (or was it a Cooper's) hawk standing beside the road. It had just caught his supper. I'm glad I didn't scare it off.

She also has beaucoup squirrels and a few chipmunks. I was watching one eat a scrap of tomato Sunday afternoon. I'd never seen chipmunks eat tomato before.

Whole lotta wildlife in town these days! :manganr:

The raccoon is picky. What he won't eat, though, the 'possum usually will. She was given a cantaloupe that I told her was bad before she cut it. I could smell it!

After she cut it, it was stinking up the kitchen! So, she put it out on the deck for the critters. They wouldn't touch it either! Finally, the bugs and bees ate it, but the critters didn't!
