We've had a couple of people come in hot on the BM51, so like any self-respecting scientist, I took to the internet to learn some facts (read: more passionate opinions). I present to you my rudimentary findings and resultant null hypothesis: the stock BM51 does not crown a flipper's collection as non-suck, but does provide a great mediocre knife primed and ready for improvement through modification. Since I'm not a flipper, I do understand that my findings are subject to the same inversely proportional hype associated with squid and rep, but I do look forward to counter arguments that reject the null hypothesis and support the alternate. :torch:

Nice point "dad" and tell that last guy. Theres a line to get in this family pal! =wait list on the adoptings!

    Jkjk

The bm51 always seemed solid but designed in the flipper stone ages before the young ones made the quantum leaps in flipping skills and knife specs and balance. Still can't go wrong with a benchmade. And i love my clacky tlatch 42 warts pits and all. Will never tire of that one. But i think i need a hom and brs etc... then ill get good at flipping, that's all that's holding me back. Equipment and needing supportive parenting...(esp with the funding).

Kidding! Except for the liking benchmade balis even when they flip funny

I like you so I will give you an honest answer and put the joking aside. Obviously, most of what I say are generalities and doesn't encompass everything/everybody. So don't take everything as literal. Take it more as directional. With that caveat...

Most kids don't know shit other than what they're told on Reddit/Facebook/Pornhub and form their opinions from that. If your collection consists of balisongs that only came into existent within the past 5 years I'm going to assume you never held a BM42/43/47, Balibalistic, Dobruski, Hom Original Basilisk, etc. There are only a handful of people who can claim they have (Buddha, The BRS boys, Horsechoker, Nard, etc). A lot of them use to be on this forum and their opinion of what makes a good flipper outweighs that of a majority of the population.

When you visit forums you'll see EVERYBODY say get a Squid or get a BRS (or whatever). A lot of these people are just parroting something they heard. I'm not saying these are bad balisongs or if they're wrong. I'm saying they are limited in their knowledge since they haven't really tried some ELITE flippers.

So when I look at a person's collection I look for certain balisongs in it that tells me "hey, maybe this person knows something about balisongs". For me, that's the BM51. But you can replace that with a BMx, Balibalistic, Dobruski, 29 Knives, Hom Tempest, ect...lol.

This is true for anything. The opinion of an expert should outweigh those of the regular Joe. So I have to use something to try and distinguish one from the other...hence, any collection without a BM51 sucks (not literally).

***But yes, BRS currently makes the best "flippers"

I've looked into purchasing some newer knifemakers but impossible on drops and then when they hit the secondary market prices are not good.

Thanks for the elaboration! That's a good write up. I always try to get into my son's hobbies and went through the same journey everyone probably does, which is one framed by sticker shock and frustration with availability. Originally (last year) wanted to get him a bm51 because it was (a) available, (b) modable if initially wasn't a pleaser, (c) relatively modest in cost, and (d) seemed to valued by a small voice in room in its potential to improve technique due to the light weight.

My son's perspective on the bm51 at the time was negative, but obvi not due to expertise. He ultimately has come around to consider it, but still lusts after the brs rep and black balisong rebola. I'm sure the bm51 will make it into his collection eventually, as I'm also feel he is migrating from just flipping to a general appreciation and desire to collect.

Unfortunately for him, he's a teen with no $$$, so that collection grows slowly. I do appreciate you all for arming me with advice and info to better inform my decisions when helping him expand his collection through gift!

New school makers are changing the market. The classics are still a hot commodity.
