    Hey guys

I was wondering if any of you use some sort of holding device like I do

Without it my flatgrinds suck and it takes more time to get an even grind.

That´s how my device looks like.
It´s not perfect but it works.

What do the pros use to get a perfect flat grind?

Are there any other devices, angle rests,..out there which are essential ???

Would be great if you could post some pics

    thx a lot!!!

Go to www.britishblades.com and do a search for Grinding my way, by Aly(pic heavy). It show his little device, along with another by akraven.

Yours looks similar. And, if it works, that's what it's all about!:jdwink2::mack:

    yeah I know:desmodus:

freehand grinding is the way to go.

but until I can do it I have to use a jig to have a feeling of success

Using a jig will never allow you to get better at grinding.

You really need to do it freehand, and go through the learning mistakes, until you get comfortable. It really doesn't take that long.

just holdem' and go for it.....
I have semi permenant burn scars down my first fingers to prove it :)
Once you can grab any knife, no matter what size, shape, or thickness and grind them out you will be king :)

In the amount of time that your fussing with a fixture a seasoned veterian can knock out another knife before you can get your fixture set up. And the big picture is that a fixture prevents you from actually learning how to grind freehand.

Just my opinion and way of looking at it.

I use mental telepathy to make the steel hover exactly where I want it, whether its on the wheel or band saw or drill press. That way I don't get my fingers all melted. And the best part is I do this while lounging on my magic flying carpet sipping Vodka Gimlets. Oh yea thats with one hand and one eye tied behind my back.

    I've got a free hand, but it ain't grinding..........:popcorn::devilzeek

    Just kidding.

Just buy some steel and get the worry of f'n it up out of your head. Then throw that bitch up there and grind it like it owes you money or pissed you off.

That's what I do, but it may also explain the scars on my hands.........

All right I will be 1st

All the knifemakers if you show me yours (indexfinger) I wil show you mine?

    Maybe I am just clumsey

This what you end up with freehanding a knifemakers hand

Would this be highjacking the tread?

If you want to get better you've got to free hand it. By that I also mean, not using a rest or anything. You need to feel the heat of the steel and it making contact with the platen or wheel. I hate flat grinding myself and prefer a 14" wheel.

my fingers look like that from lanyard making and grinding :ladydevils:

with my belt grinder the only thing I can do is a flat grind.

so looks like I have to practice a LOT :bang:
