Hello all I'm new to the forum and love all the cool shit on here! That said, I was bored as hell & had some free time today.... So I started playing around in the shop & whipped up a prototype trainer blade for a Benchmade 87 Balisong.
Your probably like what the F**K!!! Why ruin a bad ass knife?? Well long story short I got 4 kids and whenever I'm not working I spend every moment I can with them. That being said its hard to get some good time in flipping my knives. Im always afraid the balisong will fly out of my hand and hurt one of my kids. So I decided today that I would make a precision weighted & balanced trainer blade for my favorite balisong. Then I can flip the shit out of it around my kids and wife with out any worries.

I am by no means a master flipper and struggle with the elaborate moves but I love learning and playing with balisongs. So I wanted to get some input on how I could enhance my first design? Im going to change around some of the geometry tonight in Inventor HSM and throw some fillets on the spine to give it a crowned spine. That way It would be more gentle smacking the back of my hand.

Heres what I banged out so far......

I cut some blanks out on my plasma table from some scrap stainless that I had laying around.

I drew up a quick design during the day in between things....
    IMG_0072.jpg

The actual blade on the 87 weighs in at 39.1 grams (with out the tang pins) so I wanted to get my trainer blade some where around 40 grams at the most.

    IMG_0008.jpg

Drilled then milled the bearing pickets on the first side.
    IMG_0019.jpg

Flipped it & dialed it in to mill the bearing pockets on the opposing side.

    IMG_0015.jpg

Drilled & tapped a jig to bolt the blade onto & then milled out the contour.

    IMG_0021.jpg

First try I got it a little heavy. 5 grams over the Benchmade blade. Ill improve it and lighten it up tomorrow.

Heres some comparisons to the Benchmade blade.

The pics look like very good work. It remains the Tang pin to install and it should be a good trainer!!!

I appreciate the the kind words! Thank you! After sleeping on it I came to realize that the .25 holes drilled into it to reduce the weight are kinda..... boring. lol
So I'm going to play around with the CAD model later today and throw some pockets and chamfers into the body to make it a little more exciting. Ill throw up a pic when its done.

    Here’s today’s project, Trainer blade 2.0!

The best part about the new design is that I got it to weigh nearly exactly the same as the stock blade!

Im trying to think of a bad ass name I don't know maybe the....

Nice! I've been considering getting an 87. People have hated on it but for some reason I feel like I would really like it. That's a rather familiar thought I get all to often ...

Good job though! Does it flip the same as the live blade?

Holy shit. That's the coolest thing I've ever seen! Are you going to sell these because I'm pretty sure there will be a market for them?

Absolutely! I’ll have them back from heat treat next week. I’ll have to add a Bali category to my site but keep an eye out for them.

It’s fairly easy to swap the blades as long as you don’t don’t loose anything lol. I put the trainer blades up on my website here

I also have BRS trainers in the works as well.
