Jack and Coke never did it for me. Ginger ale is OK, but I usually just have an ice cube or two.... :OTHERJD:

I am more of a coffee and whisky guy for a few decades now, every day whether I need it or not. With the real good stuff a little water or a ice cube will do.:alcoholic:

Today's educational segment is brought to you by Wikipedia...

    WOW! That's a big shell!

Except, it's an example of "forced perspective" where an object is placed closer to a lens to make it appear bigger. (Either that, or that guy is about 27 inches tall!).

Here's the actual size of those shells...
    BigBangTrue.jpg
    Still pretty big though.

For those interested, the 16"/50 caliber Mark 7 were the large guns on the Iowa-class battleships. Each ship had 3 batteries of 3 guns each. For you math slackers, that's 9 total pieces. Each was capable of being fired independently of the others in the battery, and at a different angle for different ranges. Elevation ranged from -5º to +45º.

"50 caliber" denotes that the barrel length, from chamber to muzzle, is 50 times the diameter. The Mark 7 had a barrel 66.6 feet in length. :cheesydevil:

The High Capacity shells (Mark 13) weighed 1,900 pounds. EACH. The Armor Piercing shells (Mark 8) weighed 2,700 pounds. There was also a Nuclear Mark 23 shell that had a weight given variously as 1,500 or 1,900 pounds, and had an explosive yield of 15-20 kilotons.

The Mark 8 shells gave the North Carolina, South Dakota, and Iowa-classes the second heaviest broadside of all battleship classes. Only the Yamato-class super-battleships could throw more weight. The Mark 7 guns and the 2,700-pound projectiles were 19.2 percent lighter than the 46 cm/45 Type 94 naval guns of the Japanese Yamato-class battleships, but had better armor penetration ability at long range.

By the way, the North Carolina, and South Dakota-classes actually had 16"/45 caliber Mark 6 guns, but were capable of firing the Mark 8 shells, but with less velocity and less maximum range.

The gun fired with a nominal load of 660 pounds of propellant (six propellant bags weighing 110 pounds each). A maximum range of 41,622 yards (~23.65 miles) with a muzzle velocity of 2,690 ft/s with the Mark 13 shell, and 2,500 ft/s with the Mark 8. All-in-all, you wouldn't want to be standing in front of it when it fired!

    BigBangReady.jpg
Purdy, ain't it! There it sits with the maximum load of 660#.

Now, what did that look like when you busted a cap?

They had some protecting the entrance to San Diego Harbor. The guns are gone now but there is a tour of the sites with videos and actual shells from them. This is at Fort Rosecrans there. 44471512-9125-2E26-4A794B918D0592F4.jpg 350px-FortRosecransBatterAshburn.jpg
