Another Kimura spring latch conversion

I've got a couple Kimuras and I quite like them except for the free swinging latch. I've reviewed all the different mods done to the spring latch (even done the toggle spring mod) but disliked them all. After looking at my CCC knockoff benchmade, I discovered the latches were the same dimension, hinge to latch end.
A while ago I broke one of the springs to my CCC and was unable to find a spring locally for it. Roadside Imports (yes I know) has them for under $5.00. That includes the latch.
The spring latch is slightly thicker so you must file or grind some material from the top and bottom of the latch so it will fit inside the handles.
Simply take apart the safe handle (you can leave the blade pivot alone) and remove the last screw/spacer to make room for the spring. Now just hook the loose end of the spring to the remaining spacer and reassemble. Wahla! A simple mod that works perfect all on the cheap.
Another tip; while you have the new latch in hand, and before filing the sides down, chuck it into a drill and polish it with some 220 grit sandpaper, it looks much cleaner after that.

Well played. I am noticing that the pivot hole in the new latch looks a lot bigger than the old one. Did you end up putting in some sort of barrel in there?

No, it didn't need anything. The spring keeps the latch "loaded" at all times so the extra clearance is undetectable.

How does the spring tension feel? I know I've handled a latch like that and the spring latch was weak.

Just fine, if you squeeze the handles it pops right up and stays there. I've actually had decent luck with the CCC's except for a broken sping. If you want more tension just cut off the end off the spring and with a couple needlenose pliers bend the next coil on the spring up to form a new end.

Would this mod work on the 62? I really hate the T latch on it.

I'm sure it could. If the pivot hole is in the wrong spot find someone with a mig or tig welder and have them fill it in. Grind it smooth a drill a new hole where you need it. You may have to extend or shorten the spring depending. The Kimura just worked out well.

Is the weight difference noticeable enough to effect flipping with the removed spacer?

    Cool mod man!

Honesty I doubt there's so much as a couple grams difference, so no, I can't feel it. The new latch is longer and now has a spring so thats additional weight it didn't have before.
