In Benchmade’s lineup the 87 is the standard.

To me what does standard mean is the question. To me it means it is the baseline. The benchmark and in this case, the entry level knife that is available to most. Are there better entry level blades? Sure. Can I buy one of those other blades as easily? No.

This is akin to the saying the standard single stack 9mm is my P7M8. It is a far better firearm in almost every way to a Glock 43. Id consider my 225s a better entry level single stack. But which one is easiest to buy? Which one is readily available to the general public. That to me is what standard means.

    Good thread
The bm 51 is the baby glock and the perfect neck knife for me.

The bm 87 is like a custom 1911

The bm 42 is like the HK P7M8
Goldilocks ... Just right for me..
I used to have 2 P7M8 long ago but I shot & dry fired them so much I would break hard to find expensive parts..lol
I sold them at an obscene profit.

I only collect Benchmade knives and so far my bali addiction has kept me faithful.
God help me if I stray. My wallet couldn't handle another brand of crack..lol

Anyone know where I could get some carbon fiber scales for mine? I love that materail, so nice in the hand, such a good weight too.

Also given how great i've found this to be already for EDC; does anyone have any suggestions on a good place to watch a video, or a good forum for proper sharpening techniques? I'm not going to have to sharpen it any time soon, but I just want to know the right way to do it.

If you do not know how to sharpen a knife then do not practice with your 51. You will ruin it. Buy a cheap knife and practice sharping with that first.

Look into getting a KME or Wicked Edge sharpening system. They are pretty easy to use, and won't ruin your blade. There is a plethora of videos on how to use these systems, I would highly recommend watching them all. I have a KME myself, and I absolutely love it, and I use it all the time, not just on my edc's but also on kitchen knives, or any other edged implement that needs to be sharp. Well worth the money for sure!
