    Wrong tactic

My pup just started raising hell, wanting out on the back porch where the food bowl is.

As soon as she could get through the door, she tore off into the dark barking and growling.

I went to put on some shoes, grab the 700 lumen flashlight and my Kimber .22.

By the time I got outside, I could see Lucy standing over something laying on the ground.

When I got closer, I could see that it was a possum, playing dead.

Probably not its best defensive tactic.

    Not playing, now.

I'm surprised that possums have lasted this long using that tactic

I don't think it ever works

I was always amazed at the amount of dead Armadillos I used to see on the roads down south when I was a kid until I found that their instinct when startled is to jump straight up (to look bigger).

Might have worked with a dog, but a 65 mph truck? Not so much.

    Talking

Fucking possums would be in my yard after taking my dog out for late night walk and they would play that dead shit and after the dog had it's way with it I'd pick it up by the tail and toss it in my neighbor's pool, they always woke the fuck up after that.

So, it was lying on the ground, not bothering anyone or anything, and you shot it anyway. Stay classy, man.

How many possums you been around? They are vermin, and can be both destructive and dangerous. We had several of them in my neighborhood in California, all rabid and crazy as shit. One neighbor had a little chihauhau that got into a fight with one, tore the dog to pieces, and another one attacked my daughter (1 year old) as she was crawling around the back lawn. Came out from under the shed and ran 50 ft to get to her, so she was in no way threatening. Needless to say, I had to explain the gunshots to the police...

Before I moved away, we had killed no less than 13, and everyone of them tested positive for rabies, but not before they had done their damage to both animals and property. I say good riddance.

I live in the country where it doesn't take long for mice, rats, possums and raccoons to move in and try to take over.

I usually exterminate the vermin in and around my house.

"They get into fights with dogs and cats and can inflict serious injury with their mouthful of sharp pointed teeth.

Opossum carry diseases such as leptospirosis, tuberculosis, relapsing fever, tularemia, spotted fever, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, trichomoniasis, and Chagas disease. They may also be infested with fleas, ticks, mites, and lice. Opossum are hosts for cat and dog fleas, especially in urban environments."

I'd rather have my dogs and cat be safe in my fenced in yard.

I'm sorry that offends your sensibilities.

Next one I'll bring to YOUR yard. Please PM with your address.

Expect a UPS package with little holes in it about every 3 months.

Don't think I'd dress it out FOR it. They look too much like a rat for me to eat.

    (And they smell really bad.)
