Review: Double Edged Persian in Carpenters CTS-XHP Alloy

Hi,

I wrote this for Ken after there are not to much user knives in CTS-XHP out there, and I wanted to share how happy I am with the knife.

so here we go:

the xhp, in my eyes is really superior to common d2 steel.

the edge can be ground and sharpened a lot finer, then regular d2, it's more corrosion resistant and i like the way it cuts. it seems to be quite impact resistant, too. but i wouldn't make a chopper out of it. i think it would be interesting to see how easy it can be polished aswell.

i'm very fond of it's edge holding capabilities, doesn't wear out as fast as my s30v blades, i was able to do 74 cuts through real sisal-rope and it would still shave, at 76 cuts shaving was possible only under pressure and at 80 no more shaving but it still would cut well enough.

for comparison, in my tests, most s30v with similar blade geometries gave up at about 45-50 cuts through that sisal-rope, only carbon steel knives with a pure cutting geometrie would exceed the 80 cuts and still shave - but the edges need to be that fine, that other jobs besides cutting can't be done properly. so speaking of utility knives the persian in xhp is by far the best cutter i have.

i don't know about the price of the xhp, but if it can compete with some of the other, considered "standard" steels in custom knife making (s30v, ats-34/154c(p)m and stuff) i think it would be a good choice for your line of knives, maybe except for the breacher, which i would gladly see being made from a differentially hardened carbon-steel one day *hint* - i think that would be great.

back on the persian, i really like it - it's a very usefull knife and it got the looks, i hope you don't mind me saying that, but espacially the double edged variant - just screams "bad boy" - i like that. lol. like i said, it cut's great and is in my eyes a perfect blade for self defense purposes - not so much for prying and stuff because of the needle-point tip. my wife said the tip reminded her a lot on the tip of her civillian - and she is right, both are soooo sharp & pointy, it's a pleasure to "hook" something and then cut. reverse edged on the persian. love it.

although i don't edc the persian, i have it in the knife compartment of my edc bag quite often, especially when being on the roads late at night.

i suggest to write ken if you want one, it's a cool and very good knife - well worth every pennie.

not much more what i could add, except that ken is, like only a few others, absolutely top notch, great to deal with - get one, or better "on the list" now - the sooner you can have it in your pocket, on your belt or in your hands #
