Info on a peice of Ivory

    Hey guys,

Was hoping one of you might know something about this piece. My father had one of the largest private Ivory collection in the US and starting parting it out a few years ago. He knew one piece in particular was my favorite and I was sad to see it go. He ended up not selling that piece and a few weeks later gave it to me as a surprise.

If any of you fellow collectors have any info on it, that would be awesome and I thought I would share some pics.

    Thanks in advance.

I know nothing about ivory, but I know I like those bones. You should definitely seek professional advice on that one. If it's valuable, it's probably really valuable. It looks like it has a story, that's for sure.

I took it to an auction house, but they looked at my tattoos and figured I needed crack or heroin. They tried to offer me $200 for it and wouldn't give me any info on it other than "that's unique" I laughed and told them it wasn't for sale, but thanks for the insult...lol

The owner actually came running out to my car to ask if he could see it one last time, and I had to drive off before he soiled it with his filthy thoughts.

wow, that is really nice. cool pics too. good luck with that appraisal. try contacting these fellows:

it looks like they lowballed you pretty good per this site. says that 7-9" ivory carvings start at approx. $900. Yours seems rather complex so i'd guess it's worth a lot more.

Thanks for the compliments, guys. And thanks for the link Towelie. I guess this thing is about 11 inches. I would measure it, but between my 4 year old daughter and my wife and mother in law, you can't find shit in this place.

Yup, it's grined like wood is. My pop had some really cool pieces. I'll see if I can capture the grain in it.

you need to find (probably on line) an appraiser of ivory art work. I suspect it is worth a lot more then the $200 some auction house - which subscribes to the financial theory of buy very low (bleed the sucker dry) and sell very high (again bleeding the sucker)...
Some of us has decided to add your name to the list of never sell to; we suggest you step back from your keyboard and take a 1-2 year break fro the internet.
