    Finally!*warning, dead animal*

The season was piss poor this year. I hope it was just the hurricanes and not a trend.

Come north! You can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting a deer. :ar50:

Is that a way to refer to the size or age of a deer? (heard it before!)

I think it rocks to run after your own food and know what exactly you're eating and how to prepare it.

Lots of people these days don't even know where their milk or meat comes from....(other than the groceries-store).......,that's a real shame!

So how did you take that down? bow&arrow?....,rifle?

I believe it refers to the number of points on the antlers.

It may have been the Hurricane's causing the lack of wildlife around your neck of the wood's. I heard a while back that after the Tsunami a few year's ago that they didn't find any dead animal's that died from it. They are guessing that the wildlife somehow could sense that it was coming. I do think that critter's do have some kind of certain animalistic instinct that help's them survive.

Lemmy, I've been up north hunting and it seems to be deer everywhere. Alabama has WAY more deer than any state up north (according to the counters), but the thing is, 90+% of Alabama hunting land is forested. Lot of fields where I went hunting up north and the deer were concentrated. I used to be a hunting guide and when I took people from the north hunting, they expected to see a deer behind every tree. They were dissapointed to say the least. This year was a real bad year though. There wern't many deer and the ones you saw acted funny and were way more unpredictable than usual.

Hey Andy.......,what are you smoking, bro'??? :boozer:
...I figuered that out all by myself!

What I meant was: does an older or bigger animal automatically have more points on his antlers?

(no worries Andy.......,you're still okay in my book!)

(just gotta slap you for this! )

An older buck wont always be heavier of have bigger antlers with more points, but it he has a good diet he will be all he can be. An old, healthy buck may still only have 8 points or even less, but the antlers will be much bigger and massive than the pipsqueak I killed. They will also have a much higher body weight. My deer was probably 140+/- lbs. Even around here that is light for a grown buck. They can get well in excess of 200 lbs here and some places up north, they look like horses with antlers.

Mind you, this is the very short, simplified version of whitetail managment 101. Like maybe .0001

Hang out on my front porch some night and you can get all the deer you want. And I live in town. It is mostly open field up here. Deer are concentrated in what little timber we have. Fewer people hunt them now and the population is up. They are thick in town where they are safe. However, we have allowed bow hunting in town this year to try and thin the herd. They are delicious, corn fed! The ones around my house are bird seed fed. They come right up to the house and eat out of the feeder.

Nice Whitetail. Better eating than the Mule Deer out here that eat sage for sure. Gives them a funky "coppery" taste...

And BTW, more Elk than ever! Actually displacing the Mulies in some areas.
