    Triton Proto

Mr. Harkins: I bought this Proto Triton last year and it is now my favorite knife. Right before my Stainless, black, black/gold damascus blade with the ruby button Triton.

I love your knives and wish I could afford more of them.

I dont know anything about this "Proto" and would appreciate any information you coud give me.

There seems to be some pocket wear and a small blemish on the blade. Can I send it back to you for a touch up? And if so would you put in a new button? Or would this detract from the value of it being a proto?

    Thank you for your time.

    Jeff

    Button looks worn.

Blemish on blade. I really had to work to get a picture of this. It does not show up in most light at most angles.

    Hi Jeff,

Please call me Jeff. Yep, that is indeed a rare one. Circa around 2002, I believe.
The frames are anodized aluminum in a color I called Candy. It just looked like something I wanted to take a bite of. I think there were around 10 in this color, and of course only one Proto.

Unfortunately there's not a lot that can be done to the frames, once anodizing is scratched, it's scratched. The frames would have to be stripped and re-anodized. You might try some polish on it, as it could help a bit if their not too deep. Semi-chrome polish.

The blade is AST-34 with a 2" hollow grind. I quit hollow grinding about 2 years after this knife, as satin finishing was really tearing up my hands. I believe you have the only Triton that has a machine finish (grinder) as opposed to my regular satin finish. So I could probably regrind it if I still have a 2" wheel. It would need to be a pretty light regrind so I don't go through the engraving, as I no longer have that template. There weren't too many with that marking. They're just marked J.A. Harkins now (since 2003).

I hope this helps and just let me know how you would like to proceed.

    Best regards,
    Jeff

If you haven't already, you might try some Semi-chrome polish on the blade as well, pretty good stuff.

Jeff: Thanks for the quick reply.
Since this is a rare version of the Triton I think I will try the simicrome polish as you suggested and leave it at that.
It still fires great, locks up tight so no need to fix what aint broke.

    Thanks again for the info.

    Hi Jeff,
Your quite welcome. Just drop me a note if it doesn't work out.
I get my Semi-chrome off of ebay, seems to be the best price I could find.

    Best regards,
    Jeff

    Amazing Knives!

falcon125, Thanks for posting pictures of your Triton. I looked through a lot of threads and enjoyed all the knives but I like yours the best. Something about the simple look shows off the strength of the weapon!

Jeff, you make amazing knives. When I can afford it I look forward to owning one. I really like this one and the border patrol custom you made. That glass breaker lanyard is an excellent addition!
