I need help in the kitchen!

My old Black & Decker electric can opener had been acting up back in February of this year. In anticipation of it's finally going caput, I had bought a KitchenAid manual can opener at the supermarket in March of this year as a 'back-up'. It seemed easy & comfortable to use and I thought I had a 'winner'. Well... tonight the electric opener died while trying to open a can of baked beans. Grabbed the manual opener and it couldn't do the job! Finally got the lid off the beans with a screwdriver. It doesn't look like I'll be buying an electric can opener. Can anyone recommend a solid, comfortable to use, good working brand of manual can opener that works!

I have one of these...does the job just fine. Put it on top of the can, press the button for a full second, wait til it stops, then you're gravy.

Sounded like a winner, Cadi but after reading some reviews of it (34 pages of reviews... more bad than good) I think I'll pass. Might just have to hunt up the old P-38. Luckily I don't need a can opener for very many cans... the dog's food & most of the canned items I buy have 'pop' tops. The can I had such a problem with was B & M Baked Beans... maybe it's an isolated case???

    Still looking.

Here's a synopsis of what happened...

The old B&D electric poked a hole in the lid, sprayed bean juice all over & died! Then more juice dripped from the can as I tried to pry the can from the B&Der...

Next I grabbed the new manual KitchenAid opener which managed to poke a hole or two in the lid before it lost its grip on the can and just kept 'spinning' off the can while dumping more juice on the counter. By now I was pissed and grabbed the screwdriver out of the drawer and pryed the lid up... more juice on the counter. The church key was never used but it was the next user if the screwdriver didn't work.

I know I have that old Army issue p-38 around here somewhere...

Thanks for all the input... I'm still looking for a reliable manual can opener to store in the draw for the next can of baked beans.

Does this look like the one you have, socom elite? Williams Sonoma made in Switzerland... under $20 and it got all good reviews. Might just have to take a trip over to the mall.

2-3" fixed blade does wonders, as does the can opener on a vnox. About as reliable as they come.

You know... I've got 6 cans of soup, 1 can of pineapple chunks, 1 can of pear halves, 1 can of coffee and 30 cans of dog food in the cupboards and not one of them needs a can opener! The stinkin' can of baked beans was the only can that needed a can opener!

i replaced mine a while ago with one that pops the whole top off.
    no sharp edges.
makes it so you can use the top as a lid if you don't use all the contents.

absolutely loved it till i went to make a tuna melt about a week ago.

impossible to absolutely force drain the tuna if you can't jam the lid into the tuna.

now i need a tuna opener
    death machine and man....in love.

    Just an update...

I found out that my KitchenAid manual can opener will work if I use it on the bottom of the B & M can of beans... and the bottom of a can of Bush beans, too!
