    My Official AR Build Thread

I figured I might as well start this thread today. I am building a carbine for mowing down folks at close to mid range(in self defense of course). I have a lower ordered as well as a Tango Down vertical grip and 512 Eotech. I will post pictures as the items come in and as I assemble them along with the finished product. Wish me luck, I hope I complete this project faster than I am anticipating.

-Superior Arms lower receiver (IN HAND)
-DPMS 16" Carbine upper (IN HAND)
-Free Floating Rail System (IN HAND)
-Ergo Surefit pistol grip (IN HAND)
-DPMS lower parts kit (IN HAND)
    -ACE Socom stock (IN HAND)
    -Eotech 512 (IN HAND)
-Troy flip up BUIS (IN HAND)
-Magpul enhanced trigger guard (IN HAND)
-Tango Down vertical grip (IN HAND)
-ASP Single Point Sling (IN HAND)
-Falcon Industries rail covers (IN HAND)

Sounds like you are off to a great start. I look forward to the pics. Thanks for sharing the build of this one.

You'll need an upper for the TangoDown VG and Eotech.

Are you building both upper and lower ?

No, I have decided to purchase a completed upper and it will defiantly be the last thing on the list I buy. I am talking, I will buy the damned sling and extra clips before the upper

I decided I am going to do the paint job on this one myself once complete using duracoat. I have not decided on what exact finish yet.

The next three things I am purchasing as early as tomorrow with be an Ergo Suregrip, lower parts kit and a Manpul enhanced trigger guard.

From there, I will be securing an ACE Socom stock, Surefire with offset mount, rail covers, flip up BUIS (Not sure if I am going to go with ARMS, Troy or LaRue), rail covers, sling, etc... Then finally the upper to complete the firearm and by then I hope to have settled on the Duracoat color. I am thinking either a form of digital camo or HK gray.

The reason I went with the tango down vertical grip is b/c I got a good deal on it and the Eotech as a set and it was one of the contenders anyway. While I really want to get this project completed as soon as possible, I just have a monopod to purchase to complete my 10/22, a bipod to get mounted to complete my long range AR and an Ultradot to complete my MkIII. So this one while now getting some fundage will probably take a back seat occasionally to close out the above projects.

I was wondering about your 10 / 22 ...... I have one at home with the target barrel and was thinking about doing the trigger work you described in a past thread. I can stuff lead inside a dime all day at 50 yds. , but am still trying to light the stick match with it. an A.R. would be nice too , but I am going to do a serious long gun when I get home. I have not decided on cal. or model yet. leaning towards an ought six for shooting out to 1000 yds. Model 70 , or something in that league. A friend has a 900 yd. range in his back yard and we have played out to 500 yds. there , but reading about Pendleton cup and national match competition has me intrigued. I'll never compete , but I can fake it.....right ?
Let us know how the .22 turns out too !

    Cool.

The ACE SOCOM stock generally do not come with a buffer or spring. If you haven't made up your mind on a buffer, take a look at the Enidine hydraulic buffer.

    Kicks ass !

My 11-year old son was complaining about recoil and sore shoulder. I was leery about dropping one in, but dayum. . . .huge reduction in bolt bounce and smooths the crap outta recoil. I also found that there is hardly any muzzle rise, which allows me to remain engaged on the target.

My son's shoulder and my shooting performance. . . .happy happy joy joy.

You'll still need a spring, but the Enidine is a "drop in" piece.

I didn't consider that so I will go with your recommendation

The .22 for all intensive purposes is complete and has been for half a year. It really got me started back into firearms again. It's a joy to shoot, is the most accurate thing I have ever owned and is really done. My brother went shooting with me a few times and liked it SO much that he is now building his own. It's a big deal b/c its his first gun he has bought or will own since he got married over 10 years ago. (His wife is anti-gun)

Anyway, since him and I will compete against one another our builds both have to be top notch. I didn't spare any expense when building mine but never heard of a "monopod" until he e-mailed me his build list. I feel it would defiantly give him a leg up and is a cool idea so I gotta put one on mine too :biggthum:

They are tack drivers , aint they ? The real beauty for me is the shoot all day for 15.00 aspect , and much of the technique transfers to larger calibers , so it is good practice.
    Good times,

    Sling (??)

Slings are personal preference and typically depends on what you plan on using it for.

If you plan on carrying the gun for extended lengths, the two point or three point sling are the best. If you plan on carrying a side arm and need to release the long gun to rapidly deploy your side arm. . . .then a single point is the route to go.

Here's the single sling that I use: http://www.jtrusty.com/ and is the best single point sling that I've come across.

    And the two point: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/TacticalSlings.html
    (it's the CQD Two-Point/Single-Point sling)
The top of the "bravocompany" link also shows the CST Sling (three-point).

Get a quality sling (quality materials and stitching). Some of the shit on the market is exactly that and you end up paying for it in the end - twice.

    Rail covers (brand??)

Personally, Magpul and TangoDown make the best covers.

On one gun I run Magpul XT's at 3 and 9 (full lenth), ladder type cover at 12, and two short XT's at 6 (allows for the vertical grip).

The other gun has the same config as above, but with TangoDown covers.

One of the nice things about Magpul and TangoDown, you can cut them to the desired length and they don't look like shit. Unless you suck at using scissors.

Another recommendation. . . . .and it can be accomplished during or anytime after the build:

KNS anti-rotational pins for your FCG. They eliminate all wear on receivers since receivers pin holes, over time, enlongate ~ causing poor trigger performance. They come in "standard" and "oversized" sizes. Generally run $29 - $32.

I won't offer any suggestions on a light package. :-D That's the only thing that I went "cheap" on with my AR's. I own several Surefire's (not mounted on a gun) and think that they're way, way, way overpriced for the amount of use when rigged to a gun. I only run one light system and it's very impressive. A light, when mounted to a gun, is only good for 40 feet (max). Most situations ~ ~ it's 10 - 20 feet. That's from my field experience.

I placed an order for the Ergo Suregrip today along with a DPMS lower parts kit but they didn't have the Manpul trigger guard in stock so that one will have to wait for now.

Good news is I got the balls up to drill the free floating tube on my long range AR today and finally got a bipod for it. While I wanted that to finish out the project I am now considering a RRA 2-stage trigger and a ACE fixed stock for it. I need to hit the f-ing lottery just to take care of all my want lists

I wish, Maybe for my next build (A midlength)

I have an Eotech on in the mail as well speak. It will be here on Friday. I think the ACOG is the best thing out there in optics bar none!!!! I also feel b/c its magnafied it is better suited for 50 yards out and this weapon is for mowing down multiple assaliants at close range.

As a matter of fact, I think the ACOG will be the FIRST thing I buy for my next build. I just wish they weren't so damned expensive. Anyone taking notes can feel free to get me that for Christmas

The TD Battle grip and Eotech 512 arrived today:

I now plan to work on the ACE Socom stock and the manpul enchanced trigger guard. That way the lower will be complete for the most part

So is this worth it? I was just going to get the standard cheapo buffer, but if you say its a worthy upgrade I will definatly use it on this build. Also, what springs did you use with it?
