This was given by a friend, now deceased.
Can anyone tell me what purpose the screw serves?

Have no idea about the use of the screw but I'll take a guess that maybe it's used as a 'rest' for the thumb for more control of the blade...???

I found out.
That particular knife is called the Lil Blue II. It is made from a bar of 52100 and the round head screw was to help secure it in a Kydex neck sheath. I used one to process a 3 year old heifer and it would still shave when I got through. I also had a friend that was helping and he had one of ATS-34. Both about the same blade length. They both would shave arm hair. The RC on the knife is 57-58.
I have used a EZ Lap diamond sharpener for over 25 years to keep my knives sharp. I carry the credit card sharpener in my billfold.
Anyway, glad to hear the knives are still serving their masters.
