i always use a welders magnet when i flatten the sides of the blanks.
it safes my finger nails and give me more grip on my work.

I hear ya!
I actually use a grinding magnet most of the time. When I did this thread, it was the first time I ground heat treated blanks.
I just read thru this thread... AWESOME! A great tutorial for us knifemaking noobies! Thanks for posting this Martin!
