I have seen the 5.7L Tundra and the last thing I would want to do is hook up are 12000lb king pin stock Trailer loaded with cattle and head out on the road with it. Give me Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel 4x4 for real work. Not a foriegn version of a Cowboy Cadillac.

Not that it isn't a nice truck it just can't pull real loads. Toyota does not even come close to building a real 2500 or 3500 that can handle ranch work. Sure you can drive out and mend fences in a Toyota but you can't pull the product to market.

Man I feel you on the dealers... When I was buying my Xterra truck all I wanted was gray color and off road model. Couldn't give a fuck about the rest. I was calling local NYC dealers and half of them wouldn't even want to talk on the phone and half of them would be like:
"oh yeah I got the truck you looking for it is 2 WD and yellow"
"yeah you don't want gray you want blue and no off road package"
and so on and so on... Finally got my truck in Windsor NJ where lady was no bs super cool. I did all the crap over the phone, worked an overnight, showed up at the dealership at 10am and walked out with the car @ 1030.

Good luck on your Toyota man.

Stupid local Chevy dealer - dumbass!

I don't mean to scramble your thread, Mr. Wickersham but just want to inform you that your Toyota dealer isn't the the only dumbass. Back in 1984 I was looking at buying a new Chevy S10 Blazer. I asked a group of sales managers that were standing around picking their noses if I could get some info on some options I was interested in. Basically, I was told they didn't have time to help me so I left their showroom and went down the road a few miles and bought a 1984 GMC Jimmy from a dealer that had enough time to answer my questions. Had that truck for 14 years and bought another GMC Jimmy in 1998 which I am still driving. They don't make the little GMC Jimmy anymore... might just have to check out what Toyota offers in the future.

    Talking

Hah, you guys are reminding me of how I ended up with a Toyota in the first place, after driving two Ford trucks, a Ford Van, and a '65 Mustang...

I went to the local (back then) Ford dealer and told 'em I wanted a new long bed 5-speed truck..."No ya don't, you want thisee here short bed automatic sonny" the lot rat said, "Go on, take her for a spin"...

Well, they were next to a dirt lot, so instead of hitting the street, I hit the dirt...flooring it, I started to spin brodies until there was nothing to see but a big-ass cloud of dust. Once the dust settled, I drove back on the lot, met by a slew of dumbfounded gazes, got out and said 'Nope, it'll have to be a long bed 5-speed. They escorted me off the lot...

Around the corner was the Toyota dealer; I pulled in and said to the first employee I saw, that I was looking for a new long bed 5-speed truck. "Sure he said, what color?" And that, was that...haven't looked back.

Rats, I drove past an '07 xtracab version in your color down in Bigfork back in October. The sign said $17,500 OBO (about $10k off list)...checking it out, it was in 'as new' condition w/very low miles - the next day it was gone. A few days later, talking with my buddy Zack that runs the UPS store down there, the truck came up. An older couple owned it, one of them was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and they were bagging Montana to go live out their days at their other home in Costa Rica...

They just wanted out of it what the dealer offered, without dealing with the dealer again (gee, I wonder why?)...so, like ya said, the deals are out there if a person is patient. With the repairs to my current rig complete, now I'm in a position to be patient...

Worker, ya thread drifting mo-fo, back to work slacker! Besides, your 'Real Truck' Dodge doesn't hold a candle to an Abrams main battle tank...

Don't look at me. In my family there's 4 GM vehicles and a BMW.

Also I'm used to getting my ass kissed at dealerships, but it's because the people at the GM dealer we go to first for things know us. Dad spends a lot of money, so they kiss his ass...which is what he expects. Makes me gag, but eh.

Thats a good point. If you always use the dealership for service and sales and are known around there they treat you better. If you just walk in and demand that they loose money to sell you a car well, we see what happens.

In the next 6 months thousands of dealers nationwide are going to go out of business. I wonder how this is going to effect car sales. Interesting.

Man I will pay extra and drive extra for good customer service. Dealership closing will mean dropping prices left and right trying to stay afloat. But you can only drop prices to the certain level so how you going to bring the customers over to your shop instead of them shopping few miles down the road? Answer is customer service. I drive extra 60 miles to get my car worked on where I have a dealer 2 miles from my house. But the dealer close by is a fucking asshole so he is not getting any of my bussiness.

Now if they only brought back Jeep Cherokee Sport in it's original config. The best car I ever owned.

At first, these seem to be two distinctly different and seemingly unrelated positions, or are they?

BTW, if you were referring to my initial post, and I'm assuming you were, I didn't walk anywhere or demand anything. I did however offer the local Toyota dealership a chance to move existing product off their lot - so they would at least get their capital back to be used elsewhere (like making payroll, paying their debts, getting a year-end factory incentive for product sold, etc.)

Yes, I agree, in the near future we'll likely see thousands of auto dealerships nationwide go under - IMO, likely starting with the most inflexible of the lot...

Point being; almost everything in life is negotiable, especially if money is involved - typically even more so when cash is the currency of the day. But hey, it's their business and my cash - if they're not willing to negotiate on price, my cash stays pat.

    As always, YMMV

I will agree 100% with this EXCEPT I must add that it has to be EFI. '85 was the only year Toyota put EFI in a solid front axle 4X4. I have one and I don't think I will ever sell it. A friend of mine is a rock crawler guru and I will have him do some work to it, but not turn it into a crawler. It is stock right now.

EFI is OK. Trading power for economy and the angle at which the vehicle can run. but I hate computers in my trucks (and auto boxes). The carb 22r always seemed to have more power. you can convert the 22r to propane as well but that is another thread on another forum. 84 or 85 toyota 4 wheel drive trucks are and always will be legendary. The diesel would be considered the grail.

I don't think your giving the toyota its dues, I once had to tow a ford f-150 4x4 26 miles with my 83 toy 4x4. The 22r motor is a beast offroad. Got a 96 tacoma 4x4 extended now , love it! OH WHAT A FEELING. As for dodge , well they might not even be here in another month or two.

towing a ford?????? unheard of. I think ford has a little piece of every towing company. Like the car mafia. Any insight here Ron. Do you have to pay ford kickbacks? Found On Road Dead. Fix Or Repair Daily. Two bad it is not really funny, Just True.

Some of the ford hotrod guys figured out. put a 350 in it!
