pinetown-small.jpgA Durban man who fought to save his and grandson’s life when they were attacked by robbers at their business in Pinetown yesterday - has been telling Newswatch about the terrifying experience…
Antonio Bertacco - aged 63, his 17-year-old grandson, Carl Gustav van Aswegen and an employee were opening their fishing manufacturing company, Ghost Cocoon, along Trotter Road at around 6am when they were attacked by two men from inside.
Carl and the staff member were confronted by the suspects who were armed with knives at the back door.
“There was commotion, shouting, screaming etcetera and they ran out from there. One guy followed my grandson and the employee into the office and the one slashed his knife at me. I managed to take out my knife. I lashed the guy a couple of times. He ran away. My grandson was still fighting with the second one. We held the guy and we said to the guy, ‘we let you go.’ ”

One suspect died from his stab wounds. Carl had to undergo surgery to repair cut tendons and is recovering. Antonio says there was only one thing racing through his mind during the drama.
“My concern was my grandson and the employee as well. I never fought in my life, it was a split- second decision.”
The second suspect is still on the run.
