One of my employees lost her husband in a helicopter crash. This is not related to your thread, but I wanted to post it.
From the San Diego Union Tribune:

Deborah Taylor keeps imagining that her husband, Lance, is bouncing along in a Humvee somewhere in Afghanistan and that Halliburton was mistaken when it said he had been killed in a helicopter crash.
"I want to believe anything but the truth," Deborah Taylor said yesterday.

But then the phone rings. It's an Army friend who says Lance was the kind of guy you want to know a lifetime. And Deborah Taylor is yanked back to reality.

Lance Taylor, 36, was one of three civilian contractors killed when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter en route to the U.S. base at Bagram crashed in a sandstorm April 6. The helicopter was returning from a mission to deliver mail, supplies and personnel to the south. Fifteen military service members were killed. Deborah Taylor was told last Thursday her husband was missing; the next day, she was informed of his death.

The other civilians were foreman Ronald Wade, 46, of Emory, Texas; and electrician Sy Jason Lucio, 28, of Clyde, Ohio. All worked for Halliburton subsidiary KBR. The military released their names yesterday.

Taylor, of Spring Valley, was a vector control specialist who kept the Bagram base free from pests. He was returning from a location near the Pakistan border, where he had treated stagnant water for mosquitoes.

"I happen to be a favorite among all the coalition forces because I hunt, trap, control and eliminate cobras, vipers, scorpions, jackals, feral dogs and cats," Taylor wrote in a recent e-mail exchange with The San Diego Union-Tribune.

"I keep them off of the flight line and from creating serious accidents between them and our aircraft. An animal getting sucked up into the jet engine of an aircraft would be catastrophic."

Taylor's family plans a memorial service but has not set a date.

Taylor was the father of a 10-year-old daughter and stepfather to four children, ranging in age from 17 to 22. He became a grandfather three months ago when one of his stepsons had a baby girl.

Before he joined Halliburton, Taylor had his own pest control business, but it wasn't taking off the way he had expected. He decided to go back to working for a company and searched the Internet for a job.

When he came across Halliburton, the pay caught his attention, his wife said. He might finally be able to buy his own home, live the American dream.

"In a year, he could have made us a lot of money. And he was excited about that," Deborah said.

Taylor backed out twice but then went ahead with it. He e-mailed his family every day and promised his 10-year-old daughter he'd buy her a horse when he returned.

But after two months, he was ready to come home.

"He decided he was going to be there through the end of April," Deborah said.

"He was going to tell them this was it. It was just too hard on his heart."

He planned to talk to his sons – 22 and 21 – about joining him in a pest control business. Taylor had been corresponding with a Union-Tribune reporter about his pal Tyson, a hawk with a broken wing that Taylor found near the Bagram base.

Taylor fashioned a brace to stabilize the wing, and fed the bird from the base mess hall. He planned to release it as soon as it recovered.

He thought the hawk might have belonged to someone who used Tyson to keep other birds from overpopulating the area.

"I have named him Tyson because he's a fighter and high strung," he wrote. "After eating nothing but steak and chops he might not want to go, lol!" he wrote, using Web shorthand for "laugh out loud."

Deborah Taylor said he'd never mended a bird's wing before.

"His daughter had a broken arm this summer, and he watched how they wrapped it and mended it. And he told me he remembered how they took care of her arm," Deborah said.

"He definitely had a love for animals and exterminated the ones that he didn't love," she said, chuckling softly.

In his last e-mail to his wife, April 5, Taylor sent pictures of his latest adventure. In one frame, a rambunctious monkey stands on his shoulders.

He said he'd call from another base because the one he was at had only one phone. He told her to take care of herself, and then he signed off.

    "Love you, boo boo."

We have a donation box that our customers have filled up with cash and my company will match what is contributed. Many employees have donated their vacation time to her, including one that gave up a weeks pay. My company and our employees rock!
