For the KnifeNut with Kids...

...at what age did they get an interest in knives (if ever). And for those with very young ones, at what age do you plan to introduce them to our sickness.

I have a six year old. He already seems to have the bug. I was not going to push it but rather nurture it if he showed an interest. His grandfather actually seems to have got the ball rolling. (My father-in-law) He is an old school KnifeNut, a hardcore Case Collector. My son spends a fair amount of time with him as he is retired and of late has come home with a couple folders obtained there. I was rummaging through my gun safe a couple weeks ago and he showed a lot of interest when I was fondling my knives. I tried to teach him about fixed blades verses folders (he's only 6 as I said). Talked to him some about liner locks versus framelocks. Of course many of my knives were from Chris Reeve knives.

So today, I got a pair of Neil Roberts Warriors in via UPS. I was opening the package and hadn't said a word. And then my six year old from out-of-the-blue says:

"Are those Chris Reeve Knives".

Swear to god. I was floored. He recognized the logo from a couple weeks ago and put it together.

My 6 year old, too- has "the bug"

hes a member of the fine NJ KCA.. no # yet.

he has a keen interest in multi tools and wants cutty's Halo 3 ( black tactical )

he comes with me to our get- togethers and has a really good time.he doesnt know it yet, but he is going to the East Coast Custom show this weekend!!

My 22 year old son is deathly afraid of knives for some reason.

My 17 year old daughter on the other hand, has NO problem with them at all! :love: I used to take her to the NCCA shows in CT when I had a table there, and she's be "clicking" away the whole time. (she brought in more customers than I did! LOL!) She's very happy with MY collection, she considers it hers that I'm just taking care of for the time being! LOL! She has only asked for two knives for herself. The first, a 9" stiletto w/purple acrylic scales when she was 12, which I promptly handed over to her. The only other knife she's ever wanted so far, was a year latter, but I had to turn her down on that one, a $3500 custom that we saw at the show! The kids got good taste though! LOL!

My 6 year old is a little scared of knives but my 3 year old loves to make them "go click". Kids are funny about stuff but both of my boys are collectors like dad. My oldest told the ex that he had two girlfriends and she looked at me like I was teaching him that. The ex wife hates anything to do with guns and knives so we get into it because my boys need to know how to safely handle them. Can't wait until this Summer when I get them for 2 months to show them their new knives. I tried to give my girlfriends son a Boker auto and she freaked out. He is 16 and a good kid, he needs one. Hell, when I was 16 I had more weapons than most adults.

I would have to say my 6 yr old started when he was around 2 and the look of horror on his mothers face when I first let him hold a fixed blade was priceless!!! He has now been to 5 or 6 major shows and loves all things sharp. Plus the monthly NJKCA meetings that we go to. He can open and close all my MTs including the DSIII although he does have a tough time closing the Scarabs

: As of now he owns 4 knives and he always tells people that he will get all of my knives when I die... He loves the shit!!!!

My six year old(amazing how many of use have these, I wonder what we were doing six years ago?) knows all of the microtech models but the best part is that when we are at a gun show he encourages me to buy more. Which opens another subject "knives at gun shows" I went to a show in Daytona Beach last weekend and it was full of microtechs, chris reeves, mercworx, etc. I usually will find one guy with 10 or so micro's so this was nice.

My interest started at age 5. My kids have liked cutlery from the time they could first remember. One son bought his first custom with his own money when he was 10 years old - a Hossom Dog Tag. That was his entire savings. Jerry was pretty touched by this gesture when we saw him at a knife show and he sold the knife to my son.

Getting this rolling again, my son is 4 (turns 5 on Thursday). In March, I took him to a gun show (along with my friend and his 6 year old). The boys were great at the show. Very well behaved. There were some knives which definately got his attention. We were there for about 4 hours which is quite a test for the little guys. Heck, I can't remain well behaved for that long.

At home, my wife was very smug when she asked Cameron how he liked the day with dad. She assumed he would have been bored. He looked at her and said, "Mom, I don't like gun shows. I want to go to a knife show."

He loves my knives and is always asking me to take them out to show him. He likes my Hinderer Inferno and Davidson CS-1 the best because they have lots of colors and they're kewl.

He has already told me that when he turns 10 he wants a knife and when he turns 12 he wants to go shooting with me. I have no idea where these arbitrary ages come from.

He also insists that all knives have lanyards with skulls that glow.:coolkid:

Hell, my daughter is 6 months old as of two days ago. She always gets a kick when we sit down on a friday night for "click therapy". Whether its my MT or a Massaro, she just smiles when the shiny stuff goes "clink".

3-4 years old, they need to spend 2-3 hours a day with flash cards, followed by 1 hour of sharpening, they should be able to shave with a spoon at age 5. Also help them with creative financing skills!

My son started at about 13, kinda late compared to me. He uses the crap out of his knives and goes thru a few every year. I baby all of mine so it is nice to see him use his!
