I just got my first ever truly custom knife today - custom in that I actually "helped design it, a little bit." The basis of the design is purely e3's... the overall shape, the hole in the handle, the shape of the micarta scales. All I really did was to photochop a picture of his necker and change the proportions to the exact size I wanted.
If you've been looking at other knives that e3ck has posted, you might even mistake this one for a necker he recently did with the same basic design. (Raffled here on JD) This is a slightly larger version of that knife.
This is the one he made me:
I liked the yellow micarta necker so much I asked him to make me something similar, but with a longer blade and larger overall size and a pocket clip sheath. Erwin said he had never done that, but he "had been thinkin' about it," so we knocked heads and this is what he made me.
The sheath is a fairly simple flat kydex necker style sheath with the addition of a pocket clip. It could easily be fitted with a neck lanyard or chain for necker carry. It is formed to the blade enough that it grips adequately for tip up carry, especially since the hole in the blade matches to a dimple in the kydex which gives it a little something to hold on to.
Of course, you know where I got that idea, from the Grahams. I had never noticed a knife with this kind of sheath until I noticed the Razel for the first time. I had never carried a fixed blade knife before that. I always carried folders or more often otfs autos.
This knife rides a bit higher in the pocket, but is still a good size for this style carry. If I had a desire to do anything differently it might be to make a more elaborate sheath that would be formed to cradle maybe an inch of the handle to let the knife ride lower. That would be a much more involved job with the kydex, and it is not something I suggested to Erwin - he made exactly what I asked for.
By the way - it was nice and clean when it arrived. I immediately got it grubby trying it out before I took pix.
It is in D2 with yellow micarta, and mosaic pins, with simple file work at the base of the blade's spine, with the characteristic hole that you may have seen on a few other e3 knives.
I'll vouch for e3 to anybody who is considering ordering a knife from him. He immediately responded to my interest, and said he'd take a shot at what I wanted. His final product is exactly what it was supposed to be, and it was less than a month from our first discussion to his sending me pix of the completed knife for approval and purchase.
The hollow ground blade has a very subtle hand satin finish, and the blade arrived with the perfect sharpness for a good daily user. I haven't measured it but he says the specs are "blade 2 15/16" from tip to taint, 6 15/16" overall." By design, I tried to get this just about the size of a medium folder when open... not so big as to be scary, and not so small as to be delicate. At this size, it rides nicely in the pocket but is big enough for almost any normal daily carry chore I would put it to.
If you are interested in the price of something like this, you have to talk to e3. I don't think he charged me quite enough, so I am not advertising the price! I will say that it was a great deal for a somewhat custom hand made knife of this quality. You will not regret dealing with e3.
