Thread: Just bought a Cold Steel Recon 1

  1. #1

Just bought a Cold Steel Recon 1

not sure what this knifes reputation on here is like, but after having seen the knife featured on Deadliest warrior, i figured it can't be a bad utility knife if the Navy SEALs are using it.

I'll post pictures once it arrives (which should be tomorrow)

mainly I just wanted a nice large folder, that would be within legal guidelines where i live. That having been said, I still love my 62.

lol either way - I convinced someone else to buy it a while ago, and was able to handle it before I decided to purchase one for myself. It seemed like a solid util knife

I cant bag on Cold Steel. They arent high end uber collectible knives, but they do their job. Nothing wrong with the Recon 1. Besides, everyone here who bags on CS owns a couple of em. Dont let em lie to you!!

I'll be the first one to tell you that I've owned quite a few and have a machete still but that's about it... I just hate when people eat up everything that they see on TV

Im with you on that. All of the active duty military Im friends with carry a wide variety of cutlery. Some mid priced production, but most have at least 1 custom that they take when on deployment. The one person I do know who is in SF carries a Spyderco Military. I know this because I gave it to him to replace the CRKT junk he was carrying. Deadliest Warrior is a poor reference source. The Recon 1 used on the show was the older model anyways.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I was basing my purchase solely on the fact that it was on TV - I had handled one before buying one. I just figured it couldn't have hurt. I knew it was an older model too but those were more expensive (on ebay) and mainly I just wanted a cheap knife that I could legally carry as opposed to my 62. Considering it cost me around $50 I think i can say I'm happy with the purchase

Ive never had any complaints with my CS. Expensive knives are nice to collect but for everyday use and abuse CS and Spydies suit me fine. In fact I''ve got a CS in my pocket right now. Wish they still made the older Recons. I thought they looked better.

Same here....most of my CS knives are 25 or more years old, and can vouch that the Made In Japan Carbon V knives were pretty stout, and held up well to all sorts of use & abuse. I have a Voyager XL that I bought around 12 years ago on BladeAuction (which should tell you how old THAT fucker is :-), and it`s still going strong, nice and tight, despite being a pinned-construction design. My newest one is the Rajah I, which I picked up just because it was SO fucking audacious that it struck a nerve (a folding Kukri, indeed... :-), and must admit, the build quality, fit & finish are superb, approaching custom knife levels.
So, it seems that Cold Steel DOES have some attractive offerings, you just have to pick and choose what works for *you*....fuck what everybody else says....

Oh yeah, Check out my link below

Seriously though, Cold Steel catches a lot of shit but they make great users. Andrew Demko was/is the best thing that ever happened to them IMO.
