I started using safety razors quite a few years ago, 57 Gillette SS, awesome shave and a lot cheaper than the quatro, cinqo, or what the hell ever they are selling these days. A couple years ago I moved up to a straight and I presently own 4 or 5 that are in my rotation. The ultimate shave, nothing compares. As for soap, I've tried many different types and the stuff from wally world works fine and isn't that expensive. Lately I've been using soap that I get from a local soap maker and it's the best and supports local business!
Is that a new kind of mace? It's really painful

Just got in a Parker 'Best' badger hair brush... didnt want to wait for funds for a 'silver tip'; but gotta tell ya what a difference it is from a boars hair... the soap lathers up so much thicker.

Also some Ogallala bay rum cologne arrived yesterday... love it!

Anyone else a fan of Bay Rum??

    Those are awesome.

You can tell the year of manufacture by the Date Code stamped under the logo on the bottom of the blade housing. Mine says H1 and means it was batch #1 of 1962.

    A "G" would represent 1961, "J" would indicate 1964, and so on.

You might go to Walgreens and get some witch hazel for razor burn. Last week used a 1960's Gillette clam shell Bones gave me and it tore the shit out of my neck - the witch hazel saved the day.

Mines an H 4 so 1962 also I imagine. I'm gonna keep this one on the back burner for special occasions. Been using my Merkur 180 on a regular basis... gonna get a Merkur HD one day soon.

Big John, you sure your blades sharp? I ordered 'Feather' blades... made in Japan, theyre reputed to be the sharpest available. Also try not to apply any pressure when shaving with these... just do a downward, relather, do a sideward, relather then do an upward stroke. I've used a bit of pressure also and got some burn.

this past week i just got into this double edged shaving thing.

i use an Edwin Jagger DE89 razor,
    Astra SP blades,
    a Fine Badger Brush,
    Bigelow Shaving cream.

just received today a sampler of aftershave/creams from Truefitt & Hill which i found by google.

i have been shaving at night while i have some time to myself. this keeps me from rushing and if i get some redness, it gets better overnight after i put some cortaid on the redness.

Yes, it was a brand new Merkur blade - don't have any problems with the Merkur razor. I may have to experiment withe the settings.

I just got some of those Wilkinson blades myself. I like them more than the damn pharmacy brand ones I was using. Almost time to stop shaving for the winter, though.

Good point. Never really thought about that before, but that quote and this thread has got me seriously questioning why I haven't considered this before. I think it's time for a change. I've always been Mach3 with whatever shave gel in a can was on sale. Shame on me.

I cant... but if you lurk around 'Badger & Blade' or 'Shave Nook' I'm sure you'll find some good leads there.

I've heard of a site called 'Whipped Dog' that has used and refurbished straights at good prices... check it out.

Didn't you ask that 10 months ago?

Get to it, buddy! Then post pics of the bloody aftermath.

I know it's hard for people to take the big plunge and actually gather up the courage and time to learn/invest in putting a proper straight razor to your beautiful face, but I promise you, once you get it down, you'll never go back to disposables.
