    Best AR for sub 2k

    I'm considering buying this:

LMT CQB MRP (Modular Rifle Platform)

Basically from what I've been told, barrel changes are a snap with LMT's drop-in barrel system. I can swap from 5.56 to 7.62x39, 9mm, 300 Blackout, and 6.8. Apparently this has been on the market for some time and it completely eluded me. 6.8 is basically my reason to not have to buy a .308, and 9mm could make it my go to indoor range gun.

The 7.62x39 option is very enticing because as you would have it, I sit on boatloads of the stuff at a time.

I've been told that this is the Knights Armament SR-15 killer for about $500 less than the $2500 they want for one. At $1700 this looks like a DAMN fine option. This pics are from the very listing I was interested in. Of course first thing I'm doing is going back to an A2 flash hider. This is why I don't buy forum guns sometimes..

I don't know how much use I have for a true Mil-Spec rifle at all, but why the hell not right? It's only 2x as much as a shelf grade AR-15

I plan on doing those fun $300 carbine courses I love so much. It's a lot of ammo down the pipe in one day, but other than that I probably won't take it out much beyond that and just sell it back on the market.

I basically can buy this, or I can order my own BCM for the same price.

    What do I do?

If your looking to change calibers on the AT, COLT is now offering the 901. 7.62 Nato and can be converted to 5.56 NATO with an AR top. Same Lower for both.

    Good Luck!

If the performance of the different calibers suits you, and the cost of the respective uppers/magazines suit your budget, then by all means, it sounds like a winner. For me, I'm all about dedicated lowers/uppers. I'd want separate optics for each and I'd hate the need to sight a rifle if rotating all parts would be a necessity.

As much fun as shooting AK47 ammo, it would still be a lot of money for an upper, ammo, and optics/iron sights. Depending upon your plans with your lady, you may need some money to settle down - Ring, Place to live, loans from school, etc. 22LR conversion would be a little less expensive to shoot, and most indoor ranges allow their use.

For me, I shoot indoors and outdoors. I am not constrained by time, distance or budget.

LOL marriage. I probably won't look at that til I'm 30. Everybody focuses on their careers and lives at home til then around here.

Yeah honestly I'd probably just buy the russian barrel and leave it on there as it is. The 7.62x39 is probably just as fun for me until I get beyond 100 yards, then I'd need some glass and some patience.

Yes I can't seem to find a better rifle. It doesn't help that the LMT barrels cost about 2/3 of a dedicated upper. The thing is I'm more comfortable of the idea of a barrel being designed with the system by a manufacturer who builds everything in house versus a dedicated upper which probably is just as good, but I just like matching parts and manufacturing.

The whole barrel change thing never held much appeal for me. Price and availability of barrels were big issues for me. I'm still waiting on all of those barrels that will make my SCAR a magic caliber magician. I always figured the barrel swappers were more for operators where the needed less weight in their kit and someone else was footing the bill. If you're dead set on swapping barrels though...its tough to beat LMT. There are so may top tier AR makers these days its hard to go wrong. I'm a big kool aid drinker though...for me The Prancing Pony is king...and that's coming from a KAC fanboy. I would always tell people looking at ARs..."Just get the LE6920 and call it a day. Others are as good...if not better...but nothing will hold its value like the Colt". That's not the case these days. All of the top tier makers hold their value just as well...if not better in some cases. If it were my choice..since Colt entered the arena you want to play in the 901 would be my choice. I did just read a pretty cool article about the MGI Hydra QCB-D. The big deal with it being the fact you can actual get barrels for it. It sounds like you're looking at the right makes and the only complaints I've ever heard about an LMT AR was the purple lowers...its been a long time since I've seen those complaints.

..........and the only thing that can kill an SR-15 is an SR-25!

For those who know, Colt's AR's while still being an excellent choice, I can't hold them in the same light them anymore since their chambers from 3 examples I checked seemed to be less cleanly machined than say, LMT, Noveske, other brands..

They still shoot milsurp ammo like nobody's business though, it's just I'd rather get something pristine and perfect for a little more

Remember when the LWRC Repr was hot shit back in the day? LOL they do some of the best rifles in the business but now they're doing them 1 grand more expensive than the others from the last time I checked.

I still have my "bail out" magazines with ammo loaded in them for the last few months anticipating this purchase.. I just want to do it right the first time honestly. I just came to realization that I can have a lot more fun for $1500 than buying a couple custom knives.. even the sheer ownership of a nice rifle feels better than the knives sometimes.

SR-15 gets beat on by the BCM but you know when you tell people you own Knights... well.. it's sort of like the rolex of AR's

You hit is spot on with the guns over knives sometimes. I'v been doing a lot of buying of both lately...and I love my knives...but when you pull that new rifle out of the box you definitely get more of a fix then when you pull that knife out of the box...just me though. Kind of odd though when you think about it...a good knife...you can really tell...the quality of the build..the fit..the craftsmanship...you can really tell you're holding something someone put their time and heart into. A rifle its not as evident. Sure you can tell a quality rifle over a piece of crap...I think its more evident in knives...at least it is before you shoot the rifle...then the quality is evident.

Being from MD I have to support LWRC. They are pumping out some serious boomers these days. Back when I started shooting...which wasn't all that long ago...a Stoner Rifle was head and shoulders over the competition...or at the very last breathing rarified air. These days they have a bunch top tier competition. I don't think I'm so cool at the range now when I pull out my SR-15 MK12 when the guy next to me has a dialed in HK416 and the guy on the other side has an LWRC M6 Individual Carbine.

I have no idea how the 416 compares to the other big boys. I saw one for $2500.. except it was just the upper. All the people who own them just let them sit there or shoot like 200 rounds a year on them. $2500 is your SR-15 right there at MSRP!

I used to be a hardcore LWRC M6 fan. Think about it this way, if you were an early adopter of an M6 in piston about 5 years ago. You're most likely owning the same rifle now and shooting just as good of groups as all the latest and greatest brands. You avoided all the fuss of buying and selling for that extra 500-1k of money and you have just as good of a platform as the other guys who are just catching up now.

I'm going to give the guy a call, he's in San Diego and I'm not sure if he wants to ship. If he can come down on price, I can get that 7.62x39 upper at the same time since that stuff is like 1000 rounds for $200. It'd pay for itself in like 2 range days.
