    RIP Andy Griffith

I don't know if the foreign devils really knew him, but most of us who grew up in America lost a friend today. The cool voice of reason on a show that still airs daily after 50 years, we all felt like we knew Andy Griffith. Mayberry was an idyllic little town that most of us wished really exists, and Andy the type of "pa" we all wanted.

He was a gifted actor beyond just crafting the indelible roles of Sheriff Taylor and Matlock. If you get a chance to see Elia Kazan's 1957 classic "A Face In The Crowd", you'll never look at that corn-pone grin quite the same way.

    Opie, Andy and Barney.

With Patricia Neal in "A Face In The Crowd".

    Matlock.

    A sheriff with a knife.

Andrew Samuel "Andy" Griffith June 1, 1926 - July 3, 2012 Rest In Peace

America has lost a national icon today. So sad.

although I understand how some feel, we lost an ACTOR

there are plenty of other real "heroes" that die daily ie. American soldiers/sailors/servicemen

I find it a bit hard to drum up tears for Andy

if you can't crawl, you find somebody to carry you.

An actor that a lot of us grew up with, there's some value to that. I'm not shedding tears but it is sad to hear.

Not only an actor. A great gospel and folk musician as well. Appreciable cultural talent should be honored and mourned when it is lost.

I'm pretty sure that neither I or anyone else here referred to him as a hero.

He was a role model to many, as a good, gentle, single father and a fair, honest lawman. I know that he was only pretending to be either of those things, but he was present in so many homes for so long that many people felt they knew him. And to have been such a sane presence for so long in so many homes that may not have had much sanity or guidance in real life, I think he probably had a very positive impact on many lives. I think a kid could do much worse than to try to emulate Sheriff Taylor.
