I suppose it depends on what you actually intend to do with the knife. More often than not people assume you intend to flip bali's and will suggest knives that are better suited for flipping. In which case the 51 is a great knife (or a 62 if you prefer a heavier knife) but if you intend on eskrima training and won't be doing anything more than quick openings, the 32 might be a better option as its more concealable in hand and may be better suited to combat exercises.

Well when I got back into bali's/flipping I went big and got a 51. Haven't looked back since. Granted I had a lil bigger budget cause I bought one brand new but, just food for thought.
And i guess for combat 'training' i'd just tape the blade (assuming you are training/practicing with a partner aswell) you would use in said situation as opposed to a trainer, would get you more adjusted to the knife you'd actually be using.

My heart desires all and is far bigger than my budget. Both the 32 and 51 seem like great blades (and the 4x and 62 as well) and I will likely end up with both. The completionist in me will likely get others over time if I enjoy the pursuit.
I will probably tape the blade to practice flipping but I have blunt/dull aluminium fixed blade for combat trainig. nobody at my dojo will practice with me with a live blade )and with good reason).
I have been trolling Voodoo to see what comes up. My list of production balis is growing. if all that goes well and I don't lose my house I may move in to cheaper customs. But first thing's first- get a 51 and start learning to use it.
i guess you could either go for a kimura or shoot for a 51. actually get both![]()

I ordered a Kimura 4 to start and an older Taylor stag off Voodoo to start (the Tayylor more because I likes the look and the history of older knives). I'll move up to a 51 eventually.
My opinion may go against the grain, but I say buy a shitty CCC or something terrible for about 15-20 bucks. By the time it breaks which will be 2-3weeks, you will know if you actually enjoy flipping and want to move onto something better or if it was a passing fling. If you want something more...get the 51.
Was in your boat two weeks ago, went with one of Glenn's MTech Twists that have new washers put on and are given some lock tite for free floating spin.
I didn't care for the weight and handles on it, but for $42 you really can't go wrong.
Also got a Kimura 7 from a very generous seller on these forums willing to cut me a small break.
Between the two I prefer the Kimura, I can actually use it consistently and I like the squared off handles, they're easier to grip and spin in the hand at the same time.
I've owned a Spyderfly that everyone raves about in the past and did not care for the geometry or weight on it, something about it just felt off - but it's a beautiful knife none the less and I wish I hadn't sold it. Obviously that one is off the table as a beginning flipper.
I would honestly look into a Kimura. If Bali's are legal in your state, or if you just happen to know of a shop that carries them and will sell to LE's, ask if you can hold one or two of them to get a feel for round handles versus squared off handles.
If you like the squared off handles, go with a Kimura VII or something with similar handle design. If you like rounded handles I cannot really comment as I do not prefer them - but I can see Glenn sells MTech Twists that are modified with good bearings and solidly pinned for free floating action that are very well priced. Everything I've read says you won't really find a better Bali for that price.
In the long run I'm waiting for an Alpha Beast, and I'd like to get my hands on one of the older discontinued Benchmade's that have titanium handles just to see what the weight is like. I'm fairly confident that I'll be enjoying flipping for many years to come, having gashed my hands open pretty good and still not being able to take my hands off the knife.

For te moment I am looking forward to my Kimura 4 and Taylor stag to come in. Beyond thy if I can get a BM 42 I will because I know I can resell it without too much difficulty. I can't wait to flip though. Been looking at balis and vid non-stop!!
If you don't care about flipping, go spoil yourself with a Bradley Mayhem from JohnnyBmore. He sells it for a wicked price. Proceeds go towards supporting his balisong addiction, we talk like everyday about them LOL.
