They use a special rotating head that passes along the steel, heating it as it shapes it (D2 steel, which air-hardens), supposedly resulting in a super-refined grain structure that is superior to more conventional forging methods. There is a video of one of these blades (supposedly right out of the box) with a macro shot of whittling a hair with it.
They`re pretty expensive, though. There seems to be varying opinions on whether these knives are really worth the asking price or not (like most things, I guess).

Only thing I got out of that is they're differentially hardened D2 blades:

    Spine Rc Hardness: 42-45
    Blade Rc Hardness: 65-68
If you're not the lead dog, the view's always the same...

    Greg,

The knives work very well. I did test one myself.

You are actually not heat treating the D-2 conventionally - You are doing it on the spot with the Extreme heat of the process.

The Back of the blade and the Tang are not technically differently heat treated like a forged knife.

Those areas are just not heat treated in the first place so they are Soft and still Tough.

As you can see - this has been around for a number of years - there are reasons it is not popular and probably will never be.

The Tooling is very Expensive for each Shape and size Blade you want to make.

It is also controlled by one guy who wants it used only on his knives.

He would be far better off using the Mercedes approach and sharing it with the industry - maybe for a royalty.

Saying it is his and his only has gone over like a Fart in Church to the rest of us and we all have pretty much just ignored him and the process.

Keep in mind that you can use CPM D-2 at those kind of hardnesses now and don't need to stand in line for a $500.00+ knife.

I think that the Technology Changed before he could Cash in on the Idea.

    Just my Humble Opinion.

    I don't like D2... and I don't like hollow grinds.

Looks like a very expensive way to make some very over-priced blades.
