    Knife prices

It's funny which knives catch my eye. I'll be scrolling through ebay, or some knife site and bam! "There it is, it's beautiful, I have to have it...oh $350, well I guess I can save up" And I do save up, and eventually get my knife. Why can't it be "Bam there it is...$17.50! I'm writing this because I saw a picture of the Spyderco Lionspy for the 1st time and "I have to have it". "I have to have it" that's what my 2 year old nephew says in the candy aisle.

being a JD member proves that you have good taste. That's the problem, cheap knives do NOT appeal to people with good taste. I have this problem as well..... Expensive knives, and outrageous guns.... My wishlist includes a Chuck G, Terry Guinn, More Cardoso work, Nathan Dewey (affordable, but still expensive). On the gun wishlist are items like Fabrique Nationale FAL, Galil, Uzi, Desert Eagles (not for use, but just as safequeens), Ruger GP-100, Any 1911 EVER made..... As my father would put it, we all have Champaigne tastes and budweiser billfolds!.

    In vino veritas.

Will consider purchasing Ben Cardoso or Nathan Dewey balisongs... pm me with a description/price if you might sell.

    Damn, I love this forum!

lower your expectations, just want 17$ knives then you can get them right away. Or buy a ski mask, then you can, never mind!

It's funny you mention the Uzi. I picked up a M&P 15 stripped lower for my BCM upper build/assembly. I went to a FFL a friend recommended, the guy was cool, he's a trucker that got an FFL so he could own Machine Guns and Suppressor's, (I'm from MA so no cool toys allowed, I have to keep my auto knives on Lockdown around here). Anyway he had an UZI. It's the first time I've seen one up close...VERY COOL TOY. He had a bunch of awesome stuff. An LMT SBR he was holding for a cop. Even the cop has to wait 6 months for transfer. He had full auto ak's, a .45 cal fully auto gun, I forget the name but it looked space age, all plastic, small, maybe 18" total. And one .40 cal small machine gun. He's got a range set up just like Hickock 45 from youtube. Fun stuff.

lemme just ruin all the fun before it gets started good. SEMI AUTO uzi. I got no affinity for full-auto shit, up to and including their silly ass stamp/license bullshit. Offer me one for free, bet I don't take it. Full auto is probably the most fun I ever had, but has a higher cost to duration of enjoyment ratio than everything i've ever done other than sex!

I feel your pain. I've filled out the lower end of my knife collection (the ones that are between $100 and $500) and now working on the higher end items. I pray to God that I will reach a point where I can say "I'm done". Otherwise I'm gonna have to start selling body parts.

But the minute a new knife comes out...I gotta have it.

One thing that I don't like is the discrepencey in the prices of knives. You check them out e.g. handle G10 blade steel say VG10 then you'll find maybe $100 difference between one make and another. Also certain styles are more expensive than others, and I really don't know why. Autos for example

Because some styles are more difficult to make right.....auto's for example.

Auto's aren't that difficult to make, depending on the type, take coil spring knives you can find a lot of button lock manual knives that have already been drilled out to take springs, or it's quite easy to drill them out yourself.......also with knives if you compare a couple of good or respected makers you will find a discrepeney in the blade material and handle material. Compare an Emmerson's price with that of a Spyderco as an example, they may use pretty much the same material but one will be more expensive than the other

IT has nothing to do with how hard something is to make. It has to do with numbers. Its very simple really. Balisongs, automatic knives and other "cool" toys are outlawed in many areas of the united states. Since the item is illegal in many areas this means it is not going to sell in high numbers like say a kershaw leek. So if a company is going to produce a knife that isnt going to be selling in high quantities they need to increase the price for the venture to remain profitable for them.

Now if auto knives and balisongs were legal everywhere and readily available at wal-mart you would see a dramatic lowering of prices. This is how almost any tangible good works. The more they can move the lower the price. The less they are gonna sell the higher the price.

We sometimes forget that production companies and even custom makers make a living off of making these toys for us. Im sure a lot of it is a labor of love but make no mistake it is still a business. Many makers of knives and even my other hobby guitars come and go because they try to be a "good guy" and they try to sell cheap. Ill be honest with you I dont think many people appreciate a good deal as much as they say they do. It doesnt matter how good a product is. To some it will never be up to snuff because the price doesnt coincide with the general market of such goods. If you took the average knife guy and put two folders in front of him that are identical in fit, finish, and materials and one was $1000 and the other $400 most of them will believe the more expensive knife is better due to the cost being more. And they will convince themselves of it no matter the logic. Sometimes under valuing a product is even worse than overpricing it.

There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bastards!

It's all spin and double spin...look at knives made of carbon steel, they rust so the makers put stuff like chromium in them so they don't rust, but then they don't sharpen easy so they stick Vanadium and molybidium in them so that they do sharpen and don't rust..............then they hike up the price for these "super steels" vg10 etc.............then along come bushcrafters who want a high carbon steel knife.and guess what they hike up the price because they have to produce them without the vanadium and chrome and molybdium.....and we just stand their with our dicks in our hands and give them the money, and alluminium?? cheapest metal on the planet, most plentiful.but heck, you can get a knife with "aircraft grade Aluminium" handles.but it don't come cheap
