Thread: Unscrewing loctite screws?

    Unscrewing loctite screws?

So I got my mtech twist back (jerks). But now I still need to figure out this loctite situation. The guy I bought it from was nice and put loctite in the pivot screws but it isn't holding it completely in place. It will unscrew just enough for the blade to rub the inside of the handles. I hear the screws on the twist aren't the best and I don't have any replacements right now, so I'm trying to avoid striping them.

Is there a way to get the loctite loose so I can unscrew it and redo the loctite? I heard heat works well, but I don't have access to a blow-dryer. Any ideas?

Lots of times hot water will work too. Good luck.

Rubbing alcohol or acetone can loosen loctite depending on which type was used, and neither should damage the blade. But heat is best.

Actually, both of those are flammable, so if you light the acetone on fire youll get acetone AND heat!

    Don't actually do that >.>

Well, I did try boiling water. I only had it in there for about a minute though. Think it would work if I just kept it in there longer?

I don't have any access to acetone

If it's red or green, you are screwed since you need a heat gun or propane torch to loosen.

If it's blue, do you have access to a soldering gun? If so, place the tip on the head of the bolt for a couple of seconds.

I've also heard (but not tried) that if you put a dab of fresh locktite on the bolt and wait about 10 minutes, it`ll loosen all the old set-up locktite.

I couldn't figure out if this was a "that's what she said" type of joke or not...

But I think you were referring to the acetone thing. In that case, I'm in Afghanistan. No girlfriends here

But I'm pretty sure the mechanics have a soldering gun. So I'll give that a shot! I'll let you know how it goes!

If the soldering gun has adjustable temp. settings, start out on the lowest and work upwards. I'm sure you know to do this but just in case....

Put the tip of the soldering gun/iron right into the head of the screw. Takes three to four seconds max if it's hot enough. Immediately unscrew it.

If "it" remains hard for more than 4 hrs lite a match, blow it out, and touch the tip to the bulbous part....

...I can't help myself sometimes. I think I have typing tourettes.
