At school I had to do a class called "theory of knowledge" (pontsy name eh?) where we argued this sort of thing all the time, it was a real mind bender and a hell of a lot of fun. My wife was one of my classmates and we both speak English and French fluently as well as a bit of African languages (she also studied linguistics at university) so our pillow-talk often gets a bit theoretical

This I feel falls into the same catergory as "what do blind people "see" when they dream" and I agree with earlier posts that it very definitely depends on whether you were born with the sense or not. But blind/dreaming is another topic, let's not stray too far.

I disagree with the proposed idea that we think is words. Well not entirely. Our language was created (to steal from Terry Pratchet) to tell the other monkey where the ripe fruit was.

What I'm getting at is that we actually think in pictures, when I think "knife" or "couteau" I get the exact same image in my mind. In that way you can tell a story and paint the scene in someone's mind quite clearly. So we think in pictures but transfer those pictures to another's mind through words, irrespective of the language.

I once heard a blind kid say that he was born blind and that to him sight was like something out of a Harry Potter book - wrap your mind around that one! To him we're all freaks who somehow can tell that there is a thing across the room, how big, it's shape, we could unerringly walk up to it/around it, with no feeling fumbling or anything! To him it'd be like ESP (well technically it is an extra sense but you get my point).
