    Pistol Grip Only Shotguns

So I did a search on pistol grip only shotguns and I all I've found is extreme confusion. Some people say it falls under the AOW deal and can't be bought unless you're 21+ though others say it's still a "normal" shotgun and can be purchased from the day you turn 18. Can someone enlighten me please?

I have no clue what Cali law says.

Here in Texas, as long as its over 27.5 inches, with a barrel longer than 18 inches, you can buy it at age 18.

Under those lengths and its prohibited by federal law, unless you have the permit. (pay the $$)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

As was just posted ----- a pistol grip SHOTGUN is STILL JUST A SHOTGUN ---- it IS NOT A " pistol shotgun or sawed off" and is legal in any state that I know of.

Or you could just buy a shotgun{if legal age} and install a pistol grip yourself !!! Problem solved !!!

Just cause ------- sure you may know that for MOST people , a PGO shotgun is a VERY close range ONLY firearm -- like MAYBE a short hallway or across a bedroom. And if you add Slugs or Buckshot as your loadout --- Well , Good Luck .

IMHO ---- a much better idea is to saw about 3-5 inches off a reg. wood stock and forgetaboutit as to PGO shotguns.

    Hiya K,
I've cut them short and then fitted a recoil pad back on -- if you cut them SHORT -- don't use a "cheek weld" when sighting/mounting the SG --- more of a "head up" stance and find I get good hits with Buck/Slugs out to 30 or 35 yards.
And MANY will tell you NOT TO , but I have also mounted the SG on my BICEP and not my shoulder --- it is FAST , but with more recoil / movement -- you lose a mico-sec. on a fast 2nd shot.

    Nothing against Mossbergs...

in fact I have owned several Mossberg 500s. A few were in PGO configuration, one with original factory grip and two with Hogue Tamer Grips.

You should try the Remington 870. I put a Speed Feed Birdshead Pistol Grip and a Wilson Big Head Safety on mine. The SF is the way to go. Most comfortable grip IMHO.

    Here is mine:

The birds head grip is ergonomically correct and IS the way to go for a pistol grip - the stock Mossberg Persuader grip IS NOT ergonomically correct and can be downright brutal on all the delicate wrist bones and tendons with anything other than birdshot.

I have both Mossberg and Remington pump shotguns - my recommendation if you're dead set on a Mossberg with a pistol grip is to buy a stock shotgun and an aftermarket Speedfeed birds head pistol grip.

They're easy enough to swap out, and you'll have added versatility...

That, or buy the Persuader and shitcan the factory pistol grip in favor of the Speedfeed version...

    Thumbs up

I'd LOVE to try that SP Birds Head grip !!!!
I've not seen one before this post and as you said --- a "stock T style" grip is MURDER to your hand if fired with Buck or Slugs !!!

It's very difficult to find the ones for the Mossberg 500 and Winchester 1300 as they discontinued them but the Remington 870 ones are available.

    I got mine from MidwayUSA.

best of both worlds: 870 Tac 2 with knoxxs spec ops folder grip - its fantastic and I can shoot 3" sluggers without the wire down and not really even feel it thanks to springs or some type of dampener in the grip...

Actually a shotgun with a pistol grip (only) if purchased from an FFL will be considered a pistol when the FFL fills out the 4473 and does the call in, because without the stock,it technically no longer fits the determined definition of a shotgun,i.e shoulder fired.

You will have to be 21 years of age at purchase and fullfill the mandatory waiting period.

Many dealers go around this by either throwing in a stock or advising the purchase of one. This then fits the legal definition and is then still a longgun and can be purchased by any qualifying 18yo.

AOW's are another animal altogether, and actually a waste of money IMO.

    Hope that clears it up
