My big problem with people pistol gripping only shotguns is the tendancy to take unaimed shots. No matter what somebody says, you CANNOT accurately hit targets from the hip. Remember, you are responsible for everything that comes out of your firearm, and unaimed shots from the hip can cause you to hit things or people that you did not intend to.

If you are going to use a PGO (pistol Gripped only) shotty, put a sling adapter on the receiver and single point sling that sucker and extend out using the sling to provide rigidity to take an aimed shot. THat is the only SAFE way to use those guns (unless you are using it for a breaching shotgun).
As with any weapon system, the key to accurate shooting is practice... practice... practice. Yes. a shotgun with a stock will be more accurate and stable; but a PGO shotgun has merit and is useful for more than being a breaching tool. Technique and training can help greatly for folks interested in PGO shotguns.

This 'article' is informative and helps give folks a good idea of how to go about it. Pistol_Grip_Only_Shotgun_Technique

I am pretty sure this video has been seen on this forum, but since it's relevant, here it is anyway:

With any shotgun you run the risk of hitting unintended targets. With buckshot you have 9 pellets that, on average, spread out 1 inch for every yard traveled. You're accountable for every projectile that comes out of it.

That being said, you don't have to shoulder fire a gun to aim. I've got my grandpa's 16ga whose stock broke years ago. I rigged a pistol grip onto it, and can consistently hit water jugs at 10 yards from the hip. That's good enough for home defense and other close range scenarios where you know your target, whats behind it and what's around it.

If someone thinks they can shoot slugs out to 100yds from a PGO shotty, then I guess that kind of advice is necessary, but as long as you know what a PGO is good for and its limitations, it is as accurate as it needs to be.

This 12 ga. holds two in the tube and one in the pipe. Legal in some states(as far as I know)as long as you have the $2.00 Tax Stamp and have passed the lengthy background check. Notice that this is considered an AOW as noted on the 5320.4 ATF form. Rules are that you must have your Tax Stamp on you when transporting. I got the Remington 870 as opposed to the Mossberg($100 cheaper) which is also available. Barrel length is 6.5" with an AOL of 16.5". Sweet shooter, however I would Not recommend a 3" shell! The recoil isn't nearly as bad as you would think, because of the front grip. I'll be looking into the Bird's Head grip y'all have been talkin' about. Hope this helps clear up some confusion on the AOW mystery.....Ayla

Still, $5 is a cheap price to pay to secure what is probably the best home defender since the Taurus Judge! Also, pardon my ignorance, but I'm not familiar with "Mark". I'm assuming from your reply that he is involved with the creation of the Shorty? A company named Orion is supposedly coming out with a new and improved version of the Shorty, using more beefy components according to SKT Industries, a Seattle maker of the holsters for it. Know anything about that?

Nice shorty you have u there..

I remember back in the 80's,i got a Mossberg 505 w/2 differrnt barrells

when they were the new/cool thing on the block.

It came in a kit,w/ a short,"sawed off" barrell,a medium length "security" barrell

and a long field barrell, all new at the time,so was really cool, escpecially
when you put the field barrell on, along w/ the interchangable pistol grip..

I think i bought that whole set, brand new,In New Hampshire, back in 1981 or so,for about $220..

Do they still make that kit and if so,what does it cost today gentlemen??

You should try the Remington 870. I put a Speed Feed Birdshead Pistol Grip and a Wilson Big Head Safety on mine. The SF is the way to go. Most comfortable grip IMHO.

    Here is mine:

To actually answer your question, as it pertains to California State Law...

    • Shotguns on the assault weapons list are prohibited. This eliminates a total of four "cool looking" shotguns that were big during 1980s / 1990s action movies. You can tell how the legislature formed their opinions of what to ban.
    • Revolving cylinders are prohibited on all shotguns. Whether it's pump action or semi-automatic, the existence of a cylinder on a shotgun renders it an assault weapon. Just like the listed shotguns, action movies are responsible for this ban.
    • Pump shotguns are pretty safe. Without a revolving cylinder, there's no way for it to become an assault weapon due to having pistol grips, vertical handgrips, etc.
      • Pump shotguns can have pistol grips in California. This is re-stated from above, simply due to the overwhelming number of times folks ask this question.

    • Semi-auto shotguns are allowed one "evil feature". This is unlike the rifle and handgun sections of the penal code, and probably reflects the legislature making compromises with hunters within California. This is why the Beretta M3, which a semi-auto shotgun with a pistol grip, is legal for sale in California but the version with a collapsible (i.e. telescoping) stock is not.
    • Semi-auto shotguns may never have detachable magazines. This is in contrast to the rifle statute, which allows detachable magazines if there is no pistol grip, folding stock, etc. However, a Saiga-12 imported by an off-list manufacturer and equipped with a bullet button or other legally compliant magazine lock is legal.
    • If a shotgun's barrel is less than 18 inches, it's illegal. This is one of the most frequently asked questions about shotguns.
    • If a shotgun is less than 26 inches in overall length, it's 'short barreled', even if its barrel is 18" or longer. This is a strange point, but it's in the penal code.

    Assault Weapon Definition, Shotgun Section

12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
    Rifle/Pistol sections deleted.
    (6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:

    • (A) A folding or telescoping stock.
    • (B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.

    (7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
    (8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.
