Wow....no answer between 9 last night and 7 this morning? What the Hell is going on here?
What look are you going for? What is the steel?
For most carbon steels you can get a nice etch/patina with apple cider vinegar.
Boiling the vinegar increases the acidity.
Have some windex w/ ammonia and wd40 handy....
-clean the blade (soap and hot water works great)
-immerse the blade in the hot vinegar for about 20 minutes (not while still on the stove)
-remove blade and hose it off with windex then scrub the crusty shit off with steel wool and wd40
-repeat until it is dark as you want
- rinse good with windex to kill the acid and soak it down with wd40 and let it sit a while
Pretty much the same process no matter what acid you use. FC is a lot quicker and stronger. Mustard can take hours/days.
If you are after a look like the knife in my avatar that only takes about a half hour to accomplish.
What you need:
Birchwood casey Super blue (for hardened metals)
Alcohol (for degreasing the blade)
ballistol, or gun oil
latex, or rubber gloves
0000 steel wool
old 9x13 glass casserole dish (must be glass)
Old pot large enough that your knife can be fully submerged in.
1 of your favorite beers.
Here is why it takes so long. Get your old pot , fill it with water and get it boiling.
While your water is heating wipe down the blade with alcohol while wearing the gloves. You do not want any oils on the blade for the next step.
Next wipe the blade down with a good coat of the Super Blue. Fill your 9x13 dish with clorox enough to submerge your knife. Look at the clock, put the knife in the clorox, take your gloves off grab your beer and wait. (The knife in my avatar was in the clorox for 20 minutes). Almost instantly you will see the fuzzy rust starting to form on the blade, and it gets worse the longer it soaks. The longer it soaks the deeper the rust eats into the steel. Once you are happy with the soak time take the knife out of the clorox wipe of the heavy rust with a rag (it will look like a rusted nightmare) and chuck it in the boiling water for a few minutes. pull the knife out and let it cool till you are able to handle it then give it a rub down with the steel wool till you get the desired patina you are after. The last step is to rub the blade with a liberal amount of oil to stop the rusting action. I will post a better picture of the knife I did when I get home.
