Was that the prototype? It might well be.

One of the amazing things about Mick's grinding is that he can flip between hollow and flat grinds with ease. I don't know any other knifemaker who can do that like he does. I damn sure can't. He just decides which is best for what he wants to do and does it.

The funny thing about all this is that if you were to ask Mick and I an identical set of questions about the design, function and construction techniques required for a specific knife purpose, you'd likely get totally different answers. We each look at these things from completely different angles.

I like all of Mick's customs. They are very special and come from a guy who really knows how to the the most out of a grinder. I like it.
      Jerry,

Do you knifemakers trade knives back and forth to see each other's new designs and to push each other further?

About the only time we see what another maker is really doing is at shows, and even that's often when we see someone walking around the show with one. Mick's customs don't last long. Well, we do see things on the internet, but you really can't tell a lot from a photo. They can be very misleading, and are greatly influenced by the quality of the photography. Bad pix can hide features, good pix can distort them, and you can't see balance.

I've tried to avoid letting other designs to influence my thinking. Obviously it does to some degree, but I try to keep my focus on function and let cool happen if it happens and not if it doesn't contribute.

Where Mick's concerned I know a good bit about what drives his design thinking, but I don't think we've never discussed the subject. We usually have dinner one night at each Blade show and have never talked about knives.

As for that pushing thing BTW, if you're not pushing yourself nobody else is going to do it for you. There are two kinds of makers, IMO. Those who do what they want, believe in, and can achieve with whatever skills they possess, and those who copy what they do.

So Jerry, I guess your pics above beg the question, are you interested in doing the same sort of project with a Sebenza blade? I'd put the knife up for the project.

That's a gorgeous blade design on the SMF/ SNG you ground out above.

Parker I may have been a little glib when I said the blade was by me. The blade was already cut and fitted to the lock. What I did was to reprofile it a little, scrape some of that rough stuff off the flats, and grind the edges, and put a brushed finish on it. The top edge is false of course. So Mick really did the hard part. I just did my thing.

Also, I wasn't much worried about calling Mick and telling him I screwed up his knife if it didn't go right. I knew he could cut another blade.

Jerry, if that's "all" you did, well...

Seriously, nice job on that re-profile - it's purty for sure. I think the SnG/ SMF's benefit immensely from that false edge/ swedge on the spine.

Wanna cut me one of those out of something other than S30V?

I want to add a pic of something that showed up in the mail a few moments ago - bought it off a forum, good price...pic borrowed from TAD Gear, thanks guys!
