View Full Version : Need a new 9 to carry, what to get?

So I need a new pistola. Something I had to get came up so I had to get rid of some stuff and I'm without an adequate carry pistol. Got my Magnum Research Micro Desert Eagle .380, which I love, but that ain't gonna cut it 24/7.
I'm not really a handgun guy and only want it for IWB carry and practice. Good in a way because I want to settle on a single pistol and stop switching back and forth which I'm bad about.
I'm leaning towards the XDM 3.8 Compact but want to know what you guys think about other options in this size range or below. Basically I want to make sure I'm not overlooking something awesome. Looking to keep it under 700 and under 600 would be even better.
Thanks

$340 for a Kahr CW9. Great value or buy a Glock G19.

You could check out one of the CZ line or the EAA Witness or,my preference,
move up to.45 and get a 1911....perhaps one of the 100yr Anniversary models.Sweet.

Art, you liked the XD45T, right?
I'd really suggest taking a look at an XDm 9mm compact or the 3.8 with 19 rounds.
OR since you're in AZ, and guns can be bought with coffee cake at the safeway...
XD9 4-inch, used? I bet you find a really nice one for $350-400 tops.

I really like my Glock 26 and Glock 19. Either would be fine choices. Consider the price of additional magazines into your decision. bigbog68 mentioned the Kahr CW9, which is a very nice pistol, but mags are typically $25-$35 each depending on where you find them. You can find Glock mags CHEAP!!

Rover - just plunk your cabbage down on a 1911...and be done with it!
Ruger
The best gun for the money is the SR9C $400 comes with a 10 and 17 round mags and is a compact..or the new Ruger LC9 very compact for about $375 both are very well made guns with a great service to back them up

The XD M is a great gun, also take a look at the H&K P30, it has a completely different trigger and cost quite a bit.

I'm really leaning towards the XDM 3.8 compact. I've owned a few XD's and I liked them.
I've tried the 1911 thing, done the HK P30, Beretta M9, XDM .45, G21, the list goes on. I just don't like carrying a large full size handgun. I get one again I know its gonna sit in the closet while my .380 gets carried and I really wanna relegate that pistol to when I'm too lazy to change outta scrubs.
I had an XD .45 compact tactical that was badass. Perfect combo of short grip and long slide. Wish I still had that.

I'm also for the G26. It's a small enough package but still plenty capable. I shoot it all
day and get no hand fatigue. I compete with it as well and it is every bit as accurate
as the big guns. Might take a little more getting used to, but overall a great gun.
If you want something really small look at the PM9 or CM9 by Kahr. I've heard nothing
but good things about them, though I have not shot one myself.

Glock 19 all day long.
It's hard to beat the original.
When I am out of state and carrying, I roll GLock 19 with a Comp-Tac M-Tac rig. It's small, comfy, and easily concealed while maintaining the capability to get to it quick.
I also think it shoots and handles better than the XD3.8 and I thin it's a little narrower if I recall correctly.

Do It! The XDM 3.8 9mm is an awesome carry/ccw gun! Nice size, great capacity and looks sweet to boot! This is the way they should have made the XDM from the get go!
You wont regret it, I own 2 9mm's for plinking XDM9 & XDM 3.8 9mm! Fantastic guns! :madaddy:

Well guys I went with a stainless XMD 3.8 Compact.
Handled a few others but this seemed to fit my hand the best and it has a great trigger. Stainless should be good since it's warming up here quickly and I'm soon going to be sweating non-stop.

Awesome! It's an XD9 only without the long takeup!
I'm about to send an XD9T to the custom shop for their trigger job and a set of Heinie Straight 8's. When I get it back it should be like a little chunkier XDm9.

You may want to snag one of the little Pierce Grip floor plates with the pinky hook, maybe not. My XD Subcompact shot better for me with it, and I also stripped that collar off the full-size magazine. Do that and you'll avoid pinching your palm with a rapid reload.
Super nice little pistol, congrats!!

THIS. The collar on that magazine is unnecessary and WILL pinch your hand during reloads.
I would reccomend against the pinky floor plate for a carry pistol unless you train to either strip your magazine during reload or you train to uncurl you finger when you drop the magazine (neither of which is a great thing to train but stripping the mag is better). I've seen many cases of guys that repeatedly hung onto the magazine unintentionally becasue of the pinky grip when doing timed reloads under stress conditions.

Way too big for an everyday carry nine.... 9 mil is a small round, and for carry purposes, most folks would be much better served by a small-framed pistol, something along the size of a Glock 19 or smaller. There`s plenty of `em out there....

WHy would people be better served with a smaller framed pistol?
I carried a Beretta 92FS for years before switching over to a Glock 21 and never had any problems at all. I now carry a Glock 19 or the 21 depending on what clothing I'm wearing.
It's all about holster and clothing selection.
As long as it works for that guy, who cares? I, for one, think people pay WAY too much attention to "What gun should I get for carry?" and not enough attention to proper and ongoing training.
In the end, the hirearchy is as follows:
Mindset
Skills
Tactics
Gear
Worry more about mindset and training and less about gear.

I just got rid of an M9 not too long ago, great pistol, but yeah it was way too large for me to carry day in day out.
Some people don't like carrying a duty sized handgun day in day out. If you do thats cool, just not for me.

Glock 19. (G-23 if you can use .40 cal.) :balrog:
Not pretty or sexy, but definitely a 24/7, KISS, goes bang every time, bet your life on it, defensive tool. :semper:
The only thing that make it better are Trits.

I did not read the whole thread, but i carry a Kahr PM9.. This is not very sexy, but i will carry it.. I tired G19, G26, and others and they are slightly to BIG.. So I find with the KAHR PM9 i am accurate up to 20 yards( I am a crappy shooter), plus i WILL carry it...

If I was working with a $6-700 budget, I'd be looking for a 1911. After seeing the results of insurgents being shot by 9mm, I'd never leave my .45 for a 9mm. There's a reason why the military adopted the 1911 over the .38 almost a century ago. Why they down sized to the 9mm I'll never understand.

I love it when people start this argument.
The situation you describe above does not apply to carry in the US because we are able to carry true self defense ammo, not ball rounds.
It's not about caliber selection; any high-quality hoolow point in anything .38 and above will do the job it was designed for as long as you make the critical hits.
Ask any of the teir one trainers out there right now and they will say that ammo selection is way down the list of things to pay attention to.

M9 or 1911 for CCW? Shit...might as well step up to a Draco or AR pistol. :bwah:

Sirus, brings up aimportant point, BUT at the same time you gotta get something u will carry.. If its to big most people wont bother to carry it except when fishing or long drives etc.. God forbid u need it u need to have it on u

Carrying 20 rounds in the gun? Wow, the weight of the ammo alone is more than the guns that some carry, and that's considered a compact?
Nice looking pistol though. Hope you have a good belt and holster to carry it.

Nice choice it looks like a nice gun I have shot the XD and its a nice shooter, I carry a Glock 26 in 9mm and have carried a Kimber and a Sig also and find its harder to find a good holster that works for everyday carry then it is a gun. I have went through quite a few set ups before I found what works for me and it does not matter what I carry or shoot all that matters is you like your set up and it carries good for you its a very personal choice.
