Coveting the anodized Benchmade 42A and others, I wanted to have a similar result with one of my knives. In my query for disassembling a 42, I realized I didn't have the hardware to do it. I decided to try taking an Arc Angel instead.

Thanks to my buddy, Glenn, he sent a link to me by a fellow Jerzee Devil, Jackal, who was anodizing Titanium. I figured what the heck! I will send off my FAVORITE production Balisong off to be glorified by his great skill. Jackal took great care of my knife and truly made an awesome knife truly MAGICAL, to me. The finish is uniform and has a great luster. All I can say is WOW!

With the AFTERMARKET TiNi Gold Coating of the Carbon V to resist corrosion, the marriage of TiNi with Anodized Titanium has made this rare knife...Truly One of a Kind!!!

Thanks, Jackal. You are a true master of your trade.

PICTURES ARE FROM AN IPHONE. I am too damn lazy to take pictures with my 12 MP Camera.

Its not that hard to disassemble a 42, just use a hammer and punch. It usually takes less a minute to take it apart.... I have done it several times now. They arent made of glass..........just titanium and steel.

Thanks for the words guys. Since my knife forum presence isn't what it was 10 years ago, I knew that I'd have to earn some trust from the community, especially on JD / USN, etc. I also just don't have the hands on experience with knife anodizing in particular, so I need the experience / education. This isn't the place to discuss pricing, but since there is no pricing, I don't see any harm.

For now at least, as I'm paying my dues...I'll let you name your own price on bali handles as long as they are for the most part disassembled and shipped with a self addressed & stamped padded envelope, or reusable box with return label.

Right now I'm restricted to the gold, bronze, violets, and deep blue. I would love to do two-tone or multi-color / rainbow anodizing...just keep in mind that this can easily double or triple the time / work involved.

I'd gladly take on other projects, but for now this deal only officially applies to the bali handles.

Here are some pics of recent work: http://s493.photobucket.com/albums/rr296/JackalAR/Anodizing/

Another question that keeps coming up is aluminum. I never really had much use or desire to do aluminum, so I am not setup for this.

If it looks like that purple band shown in his photobucket album, it's going to be friggin' awesome!
The color and depth of that purple is absolutely beautiful.
The blue one came out sweet too, but that color purple really trips my trigger.

We are hoping for the best --- the guy that I bought this AA from got it and the blade AND both handles were pitted with RUST and/or factory imperfections ,so the guy tried to "fix it" -----because of that poor Adam is pulling his hair out and has Anoed and stripped and REanoed the damn handles THREE TIMES and he REFUSSES to CHARGE ME EXTRA !!!

I'm rapidly enhancing / perfecting my setup here and this is exactly why I'm taking what I can get for now...I just appreciate the comments and opportunity. That I hope to put that purple there to shame...that was in no way intended to be representative of my work at the time of ano or pic, but I did think it looked cool enough to put up. That came out of Comet and tap water bath...with rusty anode.

Alright, going to have to amend my pricing a little. Pay what you feel the work is worth, unless the surface is uneven enough to cause cosmetic issues that will require refinishing, and / or you want multiple colors. :shockedevil:

Took a shot of the rough handle to show the deep, uneven sand lines that was throwing things off, as well as pics of the finished product and my setup. You wouldn't believe the time / money spent getting just the right containers. :ross:

Your latest work looks great. Is that a gold or bronze tip?

If I don't sell my Other arc angel, I would like to get it bronzed or gold....

It's a pretty "deep" gold. Somewhere in between probably. I thought it looked better a little "darker" sitting right next to that deep violet. I'm still wanting to do a blue one with gold "wearing" on the edges. :madaddy:

And Adam --- I'm VERY sorry you had so much trouble with them --- I did send you that email that showed there were Quality Control problems with the last batch or two of CS Arch Angels ---- I LOVE THE WAY you have made mine look and will be sending you AT LEAST one or two other sets of handles to do , right after Christmas.

I am going to figure out how to disassemble my Benchmade Balisong Model 46 (and find the right tools to do it). When I do, it's coming your way for your magic! I think I want it gold or bronze. Favoring gold.

I like the inserts idea, but I didn't want you to spend a great deal of time since we were experimenting.

I'm not knocking your work, and I don't mean to offend you, but to my eye, the purple on those handles pales in comparison to the purple on that band in your Photobucket album. The band is darker and has way more depth.

Do you think the handles would've turned out like the band if they were polished to start with? Or is this because they're different materials?

DaBird
12-18-2010, 09:38 PM
Bobert ----- I seen the band you speak of -- and IMHO , these handles blow that band out of DaWater.

And I'd say that EVEN IF THEY WERE NOT MINE:semper:

Oh, I understand, and I'm not knocking the handles at all.

I'm just wondering what gives the band that deep mirror finish.

No worries man. That ring was brand new out of the box with a mirror finish to start with, and it was taken to the verge of turning blue as evidenced by the step on either side of the middle. Glad you guys like them.

Oh yea, and I didn't mean to imply that DaBird knew about this prior to sending them to me. Hell, the thought never crossed my mind either. That's why I'm here...payin' dues & gettin an edumacation.

I LOVE them Bro -- everything about them -- They are WAY BEYOND what I visioned in my mind --- the next two sets I send will not as much a pain in your ass -- I PROMISE/hope !!!

im a Old Bali-Ho and my eyes ain't what they were ---- could YOU see the imperfections in the handles BEFORE you started work on them ???

Just wondering as even I COULD see the pitts and uneven buffing on the blade --- but truth is , I barely gave the handles a look -- only had that knife 2 days before I sent the handles to you.

Jackal
12-18-2010, 11:12 PM
They were obvious if you went looking for them, but I thought it would take a LOT more than that to effect the appearance. Might just be somewhat of a roll of the dice I suppose. Most Ti. parts are either polished, bead blasted, or stonewashed though, so it shouldn't be that common.

...and if it's another AA and the owner approves, it's nothing to refinish them. About an hour in this case.

So you did a Cerakote?

I like it. I need to get the tools to disassemble some Balis.

Will the edge of the knife be spared from the coating process? I don't know if you recall, but I got that black coated 51 from blade forums. It covered the edge; however, if I wanted the edge to be sharp, I van easily set it into my Lansky sharpening system to bring the sharpness back.

DaBird

I belive I will have to touch up the edge on my Lansky when I get the blade back from Jeff --- guessing it will take less then a dozen passes.

You are both correct....I cote the entire blade. A little time on a APEX or Lansky and you are good to go.

You are both correct....I cote the entire blade. A little time on a APEX or Lansky and you are good to go.

I saw your choice of Cerakote and I was considering one of the metallic colors. Will it still look actualy metallic or have more of a flat finish? Will the coating scratch from flipping the balisong? How does one maintain the finish? Oil? Other cleaner?

How will the coating look on a bead blasted finish as opposed to a polished one? I have a Warren Thomas which had a bead blasted handle, as Dabird knows about. I am wondering if I am better off doing a Cerakote versus anodizing the handle. I don't want to alter the titanium blade since it has Carbon steel bonded to it.

not exactly feedback, but i do have a question about how you did the transition. when i did mine, i just did a straight hard transition from gold to purple, and id like some insight into your method, as id like to try a more gradual transition next time i do a set of handles.

I didn't quite want a definite line, but still ended up pretty close to it. I just polished off the gold areas and lightly rubbed over onto the purple side to sort of feather it in before re-anodizing. I think if I had a little more "room to work with", I'd have used another inch to bleed the two colors together something like this though a little more exaggerated. ^v^v^

That may have worked on this project too, but I wasn't sure how it would impact the "visual effect" DaBird was going for.
