Hey guys. Today I got my first balisong. It was a K3 and I happened to drop it. The blade fell into my leg just left of the shin. I would say in went in about an inch. How do you know if you need stitches? I am kind of worried because I just ran out of health care and am curious as to whether I should try and see a doctor or not. It hurts a little to walk. What are signs I should really look out for? I am hoping to go see my neighbor in the morning and see if she can help because I think she is a nurse or something. Have any of you guys had any bad cuts like this? It isn't a laceration, it went in I would say maybe just under an inch in and now it is swollen.
Edit: It went in and out almost immediately. Kind of like a bounce.

Still leaking ?
Professional care.
Bleeding in a pulsing manner ?
Professional care.
Worried about the cosmetic integrity of the wound ?
Professional care.
Otherwise ?
Fuck it.
Allow me to add .................. this is one of the oldest and cheesiest methods found in the " how to pick up the nurse next door " manual.
But ya go with what works.............right ?:bwah:

So I ended up dropping my bali as i am new and was trying to learn stuff quickly, and my bali fell into my leg a couple inches.
Like any smart human, I had to take pictures!
After clearing out all the blood it looked a little like this immediately after it happened:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b226/Hyisashi/IMG_2303.jpg
after that I tried to dress it a little and then I went to the ER. By the time I left for the ER it was as swollen as a baseball and I have literally drenched several dish towels with blood. The pictures really don't give it any justice but remember, it was ~2 inches in.

I was supposed to get more stitches than 3 but the doctor knew that I wanted it to look as minimal as possible so that I don't get disqualified for my Air Force job that I am going to go into in a month or so.
I took these photos for you devils! As soon as it went in I was like "Shit! ....where's the camera?"

:devilzeek damn that all sucks!! But, when it comes to not having health care costs or bleeding to death, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and take care of YOU first!! You did the right thing...worry about the bills later!! I hope you heal fast!! :GOV:
We look forward to seeing pics!:demented:

Should have just wrapped it in duct tape. It will keep it tight and keep the blood inside where you need it

As a former Emergency First Aid Attendant, I concur with Dr GZB's prognosis.
Inch deep means you have cut through multiple skin layers and subject to infection.
BTW, I know someone who refused to see a Dr after this type of wound. He is now missing a finger because of infection.

Good for you for manning up and going to the ER. I just watched the Road, and I realize it was an arrow and not a Bali, but Viggo didn't have health insurance and..... Well, I don't want to spoil the ending.....

After reading your post, my advice to you is not to touch or handle anything with a sharp point or cutting edge.:bwah::bruce:

Damn! I could have saved you some money if I had read this earlier.
Clean the wound with peroxide, and super glue that bastard shut!
I've done it, and I've still got all my limbs!:bwah:

:devilzeek, hope you recover alright.
I got stabbed quite a few times trying
my roundhouse catch. This is why I
opted for a lighter blade (BM51). Less
penetration when you miss.

I would have said super glue, except for how deep it was. Anything that goes that far needs stitches, and even the nurse next door could probably handle that if she's worth anything as a medical worker.
My God..............he lost a finger................after stabbing himself in the leg................that's terrible................:devilzeek
What kind of Jinglish do you speak??
To be clear for you, the person wounded his finger with a carpet knife, refused medical attention, I put his finger back together again with butterfly strips and sent him on his way. Month later, it hadn't healed and Dr's recommended chopping off the digit.
Better?
BTW
it was the middle one too!

Or just learn that sharp knives are sharp and stay inside your envelope. I spun hard and fast for a while, and a trainer would have meant buying a second pricey PCC - not an option. Cuts are good reminders!

First thing I told the doctor was that I was sorry my toenails were long. They grow freakishly fast (I have to cut them once a week).
I was using the K3 from Bradley. People were not kidding when they say it is more than razor sharp.

I grabbed a knife and it slipped and fell into my leg. I didn't go into detail saying I was trying to perfect behind the eight ball with a balisong. :madaddy:

Deep puncture wound = Tetanus shot...
I thought so too, but I had my last Tetanus shot 6 years ago so I was all caught up. I would have needed it if it's been over 10 years.
I was also going for casual sarcasm with the title, but at the time I was a little freaked out so it may not have came out the same. Lol. :ross:
Oh and Bruce... that's just not going to happen :bwah::balrog:

Keep some betadine(povidine-iodine) on hand just in case. It is the brown stuff they cleaned the wound with. You could have gone with steri-strips to close it. Send me your knife so it doesn't happen again.
