Hey gang,

This is the new Slither.

http://barkriverknives.com/albums/2/1st_Slither.jpg

It is a Wicked Cutter.

I love Reverse Curve Blades and I've been working on this one for over a year.

Finally had time to get it into production.

The Specs are:

Overall Length: 9.5 Inches
Blade Length:5 Inch
Blade Steel: A-2
Blade Thickness: .170 Inch
Grind: Convex to Sharp
Bolster: Nickel Silver
Weight:7 Ounces

I am building a bunch of them right now.

If you are interested--Bart1-Bob can get them for you.

We will be doing all the handle variations on this one.

Thanks,

Mike,

Isn't there some saying:

"When in doubt, groove 'em all?" or something?

Not really my thing, grooves. I prefer overt animation with excessive blood spray. But, that's just me.

Really, though, these Slithers are quite awesome looking. They should be awesome cutters and great in hand. :roxxor:

It's like a Blessing to have Gary At Fibermascus make us up all these Custom Micartas.

We keep him hoppin'

We have a lot of very special handle materials that are not usually avaible to most makers.

Here is a Tan Fern Pattern that looks very much like Desert Camo.

http://barkriverknives.com/albums/album83/Slither_Tan_Fern_Solid.jpg

I also have it in a Deep Green Fern Pattern and a Red Fern Pattern.

Gary is a very resourceful guy.

Mike

Could you educate me a bit on the blade shape. As far the advantage/usual usage of that style of blade.

Mike Stewart

The Advantage of a Reverse Curve is all in the slashing.

As you move forward on the blade--the Angle of Attack drastically increases because the blade wants to bite deeper and deeper into the area that you are cutting as the area of contact moves forward. the forward Bulge of the blade is naturally puuled into the area already opened by the rear of the blade.--Kind of like a razor sharp chisel blow. Muscle Severing Cuts are the rule--not the exception with this shape.

The Reverse Curve cutting advantage dates back to the Bronze Age and was found to work effeciently -- even in less skilled or trained hands.

The Armies of the ancient world were not trained armies. The King or Nobles had thier trained army but the vast majority of an army of those times were civillians pressed into service for a Campaign. Training was minimal. The Reverse Curve works with normal swinging motions of the human arm and shoulder. The force is maginified by the shape--not the person swinging it.

The most famous of the early weapon/tools was the Macidonian ( Greek) Kopis. It was in favor as a main front line sword from about 600 B.C. until the 400's A.D. There are many many early accounts of the Kopis ( called Falcutta by other mediteranian Cultures) in a lot of early Greek--Roman--Hebrew--North African and Iberian written Accounts.

In all of my reverse curve Knives I apply the basic Principals of the Kopis/Falcutta Cutting Geometry.

the Kukri is an offshoot of the same family of weapon/tools. when the Armies of Alexander The Great Conquored into Northern India ( Nepal) -- that influence--lead to the Kukri.

The same can be said for the Ottoman Yataghan--all Macidonian Influence.

the bottom Line is that you are maximizing the cutting edge without having to alter your swing or slash.

In Reverse Grip--the sweet Spot naturally lines up with the line of the natural arc your arm makes in forward motion.

If you notice--I always re-align the point for thrusting in all of my interpretations of the concept.

The Slither--Ain't for Elk Skinnin'

How on earth is that Jade big leaf done?

Is it dyed?

blackwatch
02-21-2006, 03:36 PM
The General,

I believe that it is dyed. It is done at the same time as the stabilization, I think.

Mike Stewart
02-22-2006, 07:23 PM
Wayne and Sean,

That is correct--The dye is injected during the Stabalization Process.

What is interesting is that there are very differnt kinds of Maple Burl.

The one above is from what it called a Swamp Maple--it grows in the southeastern U.S. The burls appear more verigated and random--kind of like patchwork--splatters.

The tighter swirled Maple Burl comes from Suger Maple like we have here in Michigan.

The top knife in this picture is Natural Sugar Maple Burl.

http://barkriverknives.com/albums/2/3_Slithers.jpg

There is also some pacific strain of maple that has more straight crosshatched burl patterns.

We never know what they will look like until we cut them.

This is the Big Leaf Maple Burl.

It is also a Southern Maple Strain.

This is Red Maple Burl

http://barkriverknives.com/albums/Patch/Patch_Knife_Red_Maple.jpg

As you can see there are a lot of different strains of Just Maple Burls.

We try to find them where ever they are avalible.

We find that the entire exotic wood trade is very interesting and we are learning more about it all the time.
