I started working with a new student a couple of months ago. He (Jeremiah) is very enthusiastic. He wanted a grinder but, couldn't find a used one right off the bat (money was too tight for a new grinder) so he's started building his own...

So far, we've gone through all the basics of simple full-tang blades from forge to finish. Here is are the first two he's handled, both from lawn mower blades. The first one that's completed has a handle of Curly Maple with brass bolts and the second one (which we'll be finishing on Wednesday) has a handle of Thuya Burl with brass bolts. Both have a shallow convex grind and rough flats with a satin finish.. This week I told him to bring all his dull knives from home so we can do some serious sharpening practice.
