View Full Version : Sharpened pry bars?!? Knives? You decide.....

These started with an order from a guy that wanted a knife he couldn't break the tip on. Apparently he does a lot of things with his knife that wouldn't be considered knife like duties. So....instead of making a knife with a stout tip, I decided to approach it more like I was making a prying tool with an edge. Tried a few different handle shapes and lengths and came up with these so far. I'm liking the long skinny handles myself but will be developing them a little more after some feedback.
Just got handles put on and bead blast done. They are all going to get a black out treatment of some kind. All are A2 tool steel. the shorter one is 1/4" thick and a little under 10" OAL. The longer ones are 5/16" thick and 10.5 - 10.75" OAL. One has a full flat grind the other two are hollow ground on the main bevel with flat ground tips and swedges. Coyote brown G10 scales.

Both models will probably do the work as intended Martin.
The most important thing is to have them made stout and LOWISH HRC..
Donīt want them snapping and be cut nasty..
The longer ones have better leverage I guess, but the shorter one will work better all-round...
Great looking blades..!
Very sexy!
I actualy donīt know the particular steel in these....
Is it comparable to any other?

It's a tough as hell high carbon tool steel that should be up to the task. I thought about dropping a point of hardness but I went ahead with 57-58 on these. It's supposed to remain tough even when ground thin (like along the edge). I think with this length and thickness you would have to put a cheater bar on them to apply enough force to really push them. One of these is going to get tested extensively so we will see.
Thanks for the comments :ssmile:

Looks Great to me! I like beefy tips like that. their great for the occasional knife throwing. Most tips just aren't designed for that kind of abuse. those look like they'll pound right through the wood :devil1:

Mo, I like the idea.
As a user, does that handle prevent the tool from twisting in the hand?
I just wanna make sure that the gent gets full advantage of the leverage you're sending out.
Nice execution on the idea, I'd like to know how it works if he tells you.

Hey Parker!
Thanks.
I'm gonna find out for sure soon. One of those with the new handle shape is gonna get a work out(by me personally). Just playing around with it I think its good and has enough of a rectangular cross section that rotation shouldn't be an issue. I like the concept too and definitely will continue to work on it until I have something that allows the user to exploit the full potential of the tool.
Pics and observations as soon as I can :ssmile:
