What are the major differences in the Microtech UT 6 and UT7 offerings? Is one superior to the other?

If you can get a early 6 its your best bet, I think the low profile switch and the steel slider bar is what the differences are.

Yeah, there were two variations of the UT-6. The earlier models had a low profile Ti switch and a steel slider as well as a side mounted clip. The later model has the switch we see on recent models and a bottom mounted clip with two screws. The tops front of the knife is squared off on both. The blade is removeable only with tools once the handle is open.

The UT-7 uses the same switch and slider used in the later UT-6 models. It incorporated a glassbreaker to hold the clip on instead of the two screws. The front of the knife is rounded off. The blade can be removed easily once the handle is open.

The steels that were used on these models are different as well, but I am not sure what steels were used. Someone may be along who has that information.

early ut-6 is 154cm thats the only one i know for sure besides the UT8s. But there was also another variant of the UT6 that had a side mounted clip but the button that we see on there knives today. Also the early UT6 has a second small spring that activates when firing. Why? im not sure but someone made a good assumption that it was to prevent accidental firings by making it harder to fire than retract. IMHO the early UT6 with the Ti slide is the best. Ive had a UT7 and 8 and there really is no comparison. The only downside i see to the early UT6 is the side mounted clip can become loose and round out the milled pocket for it rendering the clip useless and it also prevents the knife from sitting low in the pocket. Its probably better in a sheath but the early ones only came with a velcro pouch. Still a great, smooth little otf.
