And is giving me an ID card and a purchasing permit for a handgun:nana2: Now I need to know WHAT to get. Semi? SA? DA? Revolver? Caliber? I will be doing the range stuff mostly but if needed to protect my family and property. I pretty much blame all of you for my wanting one so I expect you all to pony up with some answers. I realize everyone has a different opinion towards this and I have heard a couple of them already but I want more information and please try and be specific .As far as guns go, I have a very limited knowledge of them compared to all of you.
I have about a 4 or 5 week waiting period before all the paperwork is complete so I have time to choose. I do need to get to a gun shop and hold a couple of them and see what I like.
Thanks all and lets begin :purasangr

Not very fancy BUT if a first gun may I recommend a Ruger GP100 in .357.
OR S&W 686+ (7rd.) .38's for the range and Mrs. HD needs.... and you can load them HOT as the .357's come if need be. minimal cost and EZ maintaince :-) Practice with speed loaders, and shot capacity should'nt be off issue. Gun is a bit heavy but makes it accurate and EZ to control with the Hot stuff and CCW isnt an issue for ya. if you feel the need to go semi...let me know and Ill throw somew more out there

Glock 23, its comfortable to carry, is a man stopper (proven) and its simplicity of design and use is unbelievable. Of course if the thought of an auto pistol confuses you try a S&W revolver any of the small J-frame. Not as much stopping power but still adequate if you place your shots correctly.
Oh yea, get night sites on the Glock!

Glock is definately a good choice for a first pistol. I agree with Allen on the Glock 23. I haven't shot one yet, but it will be my next pistol. A few other good Glock choices would be either the Glock 17, or Glock 19.

Gotta say that I am leaning towards a semi. I am going down to one of the shops in my area to feel some. I will check in when I get back later :fonz:

If leaning semi...GO Glock...good advise. Check the 23, 22(.40) and 19(9mm) and 21(.45) dep. on which cal. fits your need and HAND! best. Nite sites if 4 the House is a good suggestion also (Trijicon and metpro's are my choice there).

Another vote for the G23. It was my first acquisition when I reentered gun acquiring mode:purasangr
I'd go for the Glock.
It's on my list too.

Hey! Congrats. I've been here in NJ for 1 1/2 yrs. and think its time to get a gun here. I have two USP 9mm and an OA-93 back in Puerto Rico (Fed law applies). I want to get back to my shooting habits here. What do you need to apply?

. I do need to get to a gun shop and hold a couple of them and see what I like.
1.will you be carrying? if not,get a full sized gun.
2.do you feel comfortable/confident with a gun without a safety(especially around children)?if not,DO NOT GET A GLOCK.
3.recoil will probably be a non issue for you,but may be an issue for your wife and she should feel at least somewhat comfortable shooting the gun.
40 S&W and sig .357 are snappy rounds, some people(women) do not feel comfortable shooting snappy rounds-9mm and 45 are not snappy.
4.some guns feel like plastic 2x4's in your hand-you may be able to handle a large blocky grip but your wife may not-beretta and glock come to mind.
5.can you use hollowpoints? i think new jersey forbids hollowpoints-at least for CCW.if you can't use them then get a .45.

YYYYAAAAaaaaa HHHHHHHhhhhhhooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
New toys, New Toys, New toys,
Seeing how is Spufnik and I have already conversed on this matter, but wanting to pony up anyway.
1) Loandr---Is 100% correct, my first pistol was indeed the Ruger GP100 4 inch barrel 357/38, great first pistol for learning and gaining confidence. Also if there are others in the house that want to learn to shoot, ie, wife-kids, ya can't go wrong. My 4 little decipels all from ages 5 to 11 can handle my GP100 w/ 38 wads in it just fine. Futhermore, if it is to be an all around weapon such as fun, target, and home defense weapon-- GP100 will do just fine, a revolver in the hands of a rookie shooter will minimize Mr. Murphy from fucking with you in a time of crisis ie murderer, robber, or no-good-nik decides, your house an life he/she wishes to visit. Also, the wife will also be able to handle/master a revolver easier and faster should she need to use it when ya not home. NO JAMS--Mr. Murphy likes to do this at all the wrong times.
GET A REVOLVER FIRST THEN GET A SEMI, learn, master, begin collecting:purasangr
As for Semi-Auto Loaders
2) (My Opinion only-Many like them and are happy-I was not) Glock is a hunk of shit, had one got rid of it!!!, If it was so dam good than the US Special forces would be carrying it--the gun could not pass standards. Sig-SW-HK-Ruger, standard all steel, full size SA/DA models will do. Caliber whatever you choice and shoot comfortable-- my pic would be 40 cal or 45 cal
Then once you have mastered both the revolver & SA/DA semi
3) It is now time for the true weapon the 1911 45 cal
Spufnik- Go to Rays Sport around 10 am when they open, cause if ya go around 12 noon the counter can be busy and the sales reps may not want to spend alot of time with you. Manhandle, barrel fuck, finger fuck the triggers, play with the actions of as many pistols that catch your eye. Find THE ONE weather it be Revolver or Semi-Auto that fits you where the pistols controls are easy & comfortable to operate. Remember a pistol that fits your hand and is comfortable and easy to operate will result in more hits in the X ring and more enjoyment to the shooter.
My 2 cents
Happy Shooting,
:wolfgang: :purasangr :nana2:

I am with Borinquen on this one.
If you plan to carry, you need a gun and holster that is comfortable to carry or you will end up leaving it at home.
If you are not going to carry, go with a full size for home defense.
If there is a range in your area that rents guns, go try some. You will also get some good advice from the range. It is important that you are comfortable with the gun and that it fits in your hand.
And take some lessons at the range if they are offered. Not many can even hit the paper target when they start. And then practice alot.
My EDC carry in an auto is a Kahr PM9, Taurus 905 9mm in a wheel gun.
I like my Glock 19 better than either, but I prefer a smaller gun for concealed carry.
I found it easier to master the auto than a double action wheel gun when I first started shooting. Try both.
Good wheel guns are the S&W 686 and Ruger GP100. I went with the Ruger as it felt better in my grip. I have small hands.
Remember, buy quality and you only have to buy once.

I was ONE of the FEW to get a CCW in Jersey when res. in the 90's for appropriate reasons :-)...Chances are This Gent. isnt and is looking for more diverse uses, Good post sir!....hence WONT be carrying. hollwpoints since $1000 PER Rd. fine etc. :-) Good points. if restricted to hardball .45 may be your best bet.....NOW the question IS which exotics are considered in lessor cal., magsafes, glasers (blue/Grey), RCBD, IQ....etc...pm me . Thanks.

Any good 1911 type . I enjoy the Colt Gold cup , but there are many nice versions of this by many manufacturers. Accurate and a nice size hole.
A bit more $$ to shoot , but that is the price of a good time......and good times are priceless.

Congratulations Spuff!! This new hobbie:purasangr may cut into your knife collecting a bit!:sosak:
Spufnik
10-25-2005, 06:51 PM
Hopefully it won't cut into my knives. It shouldn't tho cause I only plan on getting one or 2.
Carrying won't be an issue at all especially in this state. I might get a holster to pretend like I am somebody at the range, but other than that, no. I am leaning towards the semi because of the coolness factor and the more I look at them the more I want one. Semi custom? maybe... Full size would be a yes. Caliber? Not to sure yet. Kinda want a .357 or .40, maybe a .45. Just so many choices and makers that it does seem a tad overwhelming. I also found out that my wait time might be closer to 4 months, which really sucks.
AS to how you go about getting the ID card and PP robertmegar, all you do is go to your local PD and pick up the forms, fill them out and take 'em back. Get finger printed and pay your money ( 54 for fingerprinting for FBI, 5 for ID card, and 2 for purchasing permit ) Really easy. Be forewarned that you juvenile record is NOT sealed like they say :dammit: They denied me 9 years ago :321: but now I seem to be a functioning member of society:D: so it is AOK now.
I am starting to like the 1911, except for the beaver tail... I got time apparently so I am not sweating it, yet that is.

to B's question about hollow points in NJ,
Last I knew you could have them and I have purchased them recently with no issues. I spoke to a shop owner that we frequent that has a range where all the local LEO's qualify and was told they are legal to have and shoot in NJ, but warned me that if you are to shoot someone in a defensive/home invasion situation, the state/local prosecuter would look at you using hollow points as having the intent on doing the most damage possable and wanting the shooting to be lethal.....Duh....and it would make things worse for your case, and make no mistake, if you shoot a bad guy in your house in NJ you are going to get screwed, hooray for liberals :teethgri:

I think I am seriously hooked and I didn't think that it could've possibly been that much fun to do but, SURPRISE!!!!!!! It was.
Had a SA 1911 1A, Ruger GP100, Glock 23 .40, and a Taurus 9mm. I really like the 1911 and the Glock 23. The Ruger has a sweet trigger and shot monster with .357 Mags:biggthum: Wasn't to trilled with the DA trigger on the Taurus.
I can see that picking only one handgun is going to be tough but I think I will have to expand to 2 or 3 or 4 maybe. We will see what happens. I will post pics tomorrow of the targets. Unfortunately I couldn't bring the camera into the range.
B is pushing me towars a HK USP with a Stainless Steel slide in .40...

The HKs are nice. As is the 1911 and Glock platform. I could never choose, so I got all three. But when it came to getting duplicates, I went with another HK.
It's all personal preference. I am in the middle of an AR build with lots of parts left to complete this one and my mind is already wondering and I can't stop thinking about getting another 1911 style pistol. I am thinking either a Dan Wesson bobtail or a Kimber compact of some sort.
Gun collecting is a serious disease similar to knife collecting, but at least this is getting me out of the house and to the range on weekends :biggthum:

Glad you had a good time Spuf. I am happy to report he shot great, especially for a first timer.....I on the other hand was apparently cross-eyed yesterday, I will blame it on the 60hr work weeks (12hr/day) I have been doing lately:snooze: . Yeah, the DAO trigger on my Taurus PT-24/7 has proven hard to get used to (after always shooting SA/DA) it has me shooting low, I need to dedicate more time to it. The GP100 and 1911 where a nice change from the fat-ass double stacked handles of my Glock and Taurus. Need to get Spuf up to my in-laws to shoot some rifles/shot guns now..SKS, AR, 870....etc.:marty:
Spuf...Thanks again for the cigars, looking forward to having one with some nice Oban scotch this weekend.

Smith Model 65 in a 3inch round butt to get started. I learned to shoot with a revolver and I think they are a little safer to get started with. You can sell it later or toss it wherever loaded with no worry about spring tension. I would move to a High Power if you like 9mm or .40 or a 1911A1 if you want a .45.

Try several types out semi and wheel gun, both in different calibres. find something that you feel comfortable with.As far as calibre, look to the future and get what might be availble to you--such as 9mm.I personally do not like 9mm but have several "just in case".Of course you can get what you want and later pick up something up off the "battle field" that the enemy is using, since you can use yours ,to get what they have--so you will be able to use their ammo.Just my opinion.

I'd start with a 9MM. Cheaper to pracitice with and good defense rounds availble in +P JHP's.
CZ-75D PCR or 75B
Browning Hi Power
Sig P228 or P226
HK USP
HK P7M8
That should get you going. Have fun!
When you're ready for a .45, most of the better 1911 brands will serve you well. Springfield, Colt, Kimber, S&W.

i'm sorry but i don't agree with that logic.
why should he have to spend 600-800 on a starter 9mm and then shoot a few thousand rounds out of it in order to "move up" to a .45?
seems like it would be cheaper to just get the .45 to start with and spend the little extra money for ammo (about $50 more per 1,000 rounds).
the .45 is not the asskicker that alot of people think it is in terms of recoil, especially out of a full size USP-and spufnik is a pretty big guy,he should have zero problems with it.

First you need an ID card , which takes 6 months or so to get. Then, purchasing permit for handguns. My paperwork came back 2 weeks ago and now I am waiting for the Cheif to sign my card and give it to me. Just takes a long time for the ink to dry I guess :punish:
Purchasing permit usually takes about a week to get :purasangr
