I gave my Father in Law a Tom Krein Mid Tech Dogfish neck knife and he uses it all the time in place of a folder (he kept losing folders). It would be very hospital friendly and the size you want. $95.00 at Steel Addiction Knives.

how about a Bark River mikro canadian II?
the regular mikro canadian is thicker and is made from A2 tool steel, but the II is made of 12c27 sandvick stainless and is thinner stock.....or if you want something slightly larger, you could go for the mini canadian, only problem is that A2 is the only option.....
i know that you wanted S30V or 154, but you should check out 12c27.....
it is one of my favorite stainless steels, if not my absolute favorite.......
according to mike stewart, 12c27 stainless rivals A2 in toughness, while maintaining higher corrosion resistance, being that it's a stainless steel.......rivaling A2 in toughness is no small feat in itself......

He is a tournament bass fisherman and former boat and tackle rep.....no its not the ONLY reason I married his daughter:devilzeek. Nobody ever looks twice at his day job when he uses the dogfish, which is fairly often for all the little daily chores we use a folder for.

A while back a couple friends and I saw the damnedest thing on TV.
It was an indoor pro bass tournament.
Yes. Indoor.
As near as I can tell, they went to something like the Staples Center or Rosemont Horizon and just lined it with a big-ass Hefty bag.
Then they filled it with water and poured in a truckful of fish.
They must have flooded the entire locker-room area too, because one by one out came about a dozen proper bass boats piddling along at two miles an hour using the electric motors. The big motors were still in place, which would have made this a LOT more interesting than them calmly pissing along and waving.
Then, under the watchful gaze and friendly cheers of 38,000 rednecks and fishing fans, the fishermen began to fish. Inside. In the football and truckpull arena.
I do love this country. There's absolutely nothing we cannot accomplish apparently.
One of my neighbors is on the local fishing circuit and he's at it every weekend as well.

There is nothing more American than Tournament Bass fishing. Having been drug to a couple of tournaments, the sight of a bunch of hard assed bubba's waiting to start strapped to a little boat with a 300 HP hig performance outboard wearing full face helmets and neck braces and then watching the launch to get to their "spot" to fish all day and then race back is just plain cool. You can also imagine the thrill of launching over 300 boats, in the dark, on a 10 lane launch ramp in under an hour.............with total military discipline and friendship. We calculated that the guy who won one tournament had run for over three hours in excess of 80 mph on a big, rough lake to fish where he did and get back in time for weigh in in a 20 ft bass boat...........that folks is serious.
You compare this to my recreational boating at Lake Havasu.........for fun, we set up chairs at night at the launch ramp to watch all the fights, wrecks, and "domestic altercations" that makes Jerry Springer look tame.
Bass Fishing and NASCAR....its the only thing left that gives me hope for America. :nyeti:

I carried a full-sized Dalton auto clipped inside my scub pants for years working in a Trauma/Surgical ICU (I tuck the scrub top in, so you could see the clip if you looked).
We had a patient family member pull a knife one night.
I've broken up fist fights in the ICU.
If there were two gunshot wound patients from the same incident and opposing sides, we put them on two separate floors in an attempt to lessen the opportunity for continued voilence.
A Trauma ICU is full of (drunk) people that have been shot, stabbed, hit with vehicles, (drunk) car-surfers, etc. Emotions are running high and (drunk) people act stupid.
Mutiple verbal threats of death, physical harm and "I wish I had a gun" slung at us on a regular basis - all of this from family/friends...not the patients.
We petitioned in 2002 for security to be posted, or lock down the unit at night (like the other hospitals). Never happend.
Not only did I carry a knife, but there was pepper spray within reach as well.
Security was based on the other end of the facility...it took a while before anyone responded.
The only time I wore a necker was while I was on the helicopter...where it didn't matter what anyone thought. We all had autos as well. When you want out of a helicopter after a "hard landing"...you want out quick. Your sitting on a 150 gallon Jet-A bomb.
I say carry what ever you need to carry based on the environment your working in, no matter what the hospital rules are. If your in surgery, you'll be opening packages...if your in a potentially hostile location like the ER or Trauma ICU it may save your life. I was a street medic for too many years. You had better be the first one to the punch and put your foot up the bad guys ass.

Sorry I've been at work. So here's the final scoop,
After asking a coworker about whether or not we were allowed to carry a small knife, he suggested I talk to my super. Well, I didn't do that for fear of hearing the answer. But apparently someone did. I was given a copy of the "rules" which mentioned no "weapons" were allowed to be carried in the hospital with the exception of some trauma sheers.
?WTF!!!
I agree with Bill. There has already been one incident involving gang activity that had me a little concerned for the safety of myself and my team and I have only been there 2 weeks. So, what to do? Trauma sheers aren't going to do me any good for self defense. What would you do? Actually, I know what most of you would do. It just sucks. I may actually try to just keep my small nemesis in my shoe or on my neck, jic. What is this world coming too...
Man those hospitals are dangerous places!
My wife is an RN on an acute psychiatric unit. Calling hospital security and the RCMP is a regular occurance there too. No one carries there....

You certainly have to balance the responsibilty of carrying a knife versus possibly loosing your job over it. As a nurse, I have always carried a knife or had one near by. As a medic, I carried a big heavy Mag light that came in just as handy. Gotta protect yourself.
As I told one guy that then had his teeth in the cot rail, "I'm going home to my family this afternoon".
As a hospital empoyee I've been told the "rules" as well. Your call.
Are you going to allow someone to take it from you?
There was a security guard in the ER that carried a S&W .357...it was taken from him during a scuffle. One of our flight medics was ex-special forces and jammed the skin between his thumb and index finger inside the hammer before Mr. Meth Addict could sqeeze off a round. The guard would have been gut-shot for sure. The stories go on and on...
You'll make the right decision, whatever that may be.
Cheers,
BC

Bill,
Sounds like you've had a hell of a career. I hope my career is just as interesting, but with 1/2 the danger! As far as carry goes, times are tough and I need this job more then anything. Hopefully the little boxing and mma training I did in college will come in handy if need be.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I will actually buy a couple of the neckers mentioned just to have for other environments. At least this thread shed some light onto some makers and styles I haven't seen before.
Thanks again JD

Burddog,
After re-reading my post, I didn't mean to come acrossed as a bad-ass...
It's just a matter of: who's driving the bus? Sometimes we can see stuff about to happen, sometimes we can't. Body language, situational awareness - why's that guy acting that way? Why is she now standing near the door? How the hell did she come out of her hand cuffs ?!?
I wouldn't trade that last 20 years of healthcare for anything. Very rewarding indeed. I chose to work in dangerous places and loved every minute of it.
All the best in your career. You'll never regret it.
It's an awesome opportunity to make real, tangable change in peoples lives.
Remember, we are visitors in our patients lives....not the other way around.
Cheers,
BC

Hospital E/R's are a dangerous place. I have been in tons of fights in E/R's during my police career (19 years of it at night didn't help....:madaddy:). E/R staff need to be tough. We would do whatever it took to protect the staff from our arrestees and others in there. Often the fight that got a bad guy to the E/R continued.
The most brutal thing I ever saw happened in our "special room" at the hospital. A guy transported in by ambulance that I had caved his skull in with a maglite (picture the Indian from the Predator movie after eating an 8 ball of cocaine for this fun little adventure), While being treated he was obviously strapped down to the gurney. Genius decides to spit a mouthful of blood in the face of the toughest nurse on the planet.......Well, he also was refusing to submit to chemical testing......There is nothing more brutal than watching an angry nurse perform a no lube forced cath.............:devilzeek. Yes, she had a devilish smile while doing it.......changed the bad guys world pretty quick. WOW.
My hats off to all in the emergency medical field, you're all rockstars:thumbsup::lallander2::urock::thanks:
Bill, you cracked me up with the helo post.......isn't it funny how all us rotor heads know being in a tin can full of jet fuel is all wrong, but still think going home smelling like Jet A and Nomex is heaven.
I have been a Surgical Technologist for 14 years now. And being the knife knut that I am, I would wear a neck knife under my scrubs. Actually, I wore a folder in a kydex sheath made for it, for many years. These days, I wear a Gene Ingram Pocket Hippo in a leather sheath that Gene made for me, under my scrubs.

When I was a street medic I carried a cheap Spyderco or Cold Steel knife, cause they're easy to lose at an accident scene. Once I became an ER RN and Critical Care Transport Nurse, I found that a HAK or an Emerson La Griffe to be the easiest to carry and conceal beneath scrubs.

Well, I still carry/use a necker just about every day. I started out with 2 el cheapo
CRKT neckers and went to 2 that I worked with Kirby Lambert on. This pic is
of the 1st one and the 2nd is similar, but has a skull crusher on the end of the
handle. I guess the other big difference is in the handle material. One is Carbon
fiber, the other is G10.

I'm in the market for a new hard use Neck Knife and was wondering what you guys like. Here is what I want.
1) can be custom, but not a requirement.
2) 3" blade or something close.
3) I probably don't need scales.
4) Skeletonized to reduce weight.
5) I would like something 3/16th thick or near that.
6) Kydex sheath w/chain is cool, or other slim sheath.
That's about it. Hit me with suggestions. Who makes a good one?
Thanks.

I liked the Izula a lot, traded it off, wish I had not, really.
Have not tried a B-Necker, but I've never broken a Bark River knife.
I've carried a Pat Crawford Legionnaire quite a bit, mine is built of 154CM with a high hollow grind and I've never really pushed it. It's at a friend's place at the moment, so I cannot really speak to how hard-use it may be.

I ordered an Izula the other night. I did some searches on them and there are some good Youtube reviews on them as well. Not to mention, it's relatively inexpensive. At the very least I think it will be worth the $50.
Rat, got any pix of your Busse and Swamp Rat?

Not this Batch.
All 600 are already out the Door in various colors.
Maybe in the Future we might do that.
It will increase the cost to do that.(Not implying that folks can't afford it)
With the Powder Coat you not only don't have to polish them you don't have to Surface Grind them.
This was the First Project we ever did in Coated Blades.
We learned a lot about why so many of the companies do it that way.

So how about this - you do mine without the powder coat plus a set of handle scales as trade for a couple cases of Krylon in eiter ninja-cote colors, or red/orange/yellow, and I toss in a five pound bag of sand as well?

Oddly, the Bravo Necker does have a secret compartment in the handle if you use the optional scales. There is a hollowed out section on the inside of both scales that forms a cavity large enough to store tinder.
The problems are that the seal around the scales likely is not sufficient to keep the tinder dry. And you would have to carry a hex key with you to get the scales apart to get at it if needed.
Of course you could use it to hide the microfilm containing your super secret trap trigger plans...

Don't try to fool me.

Okay, I tried. I really did.
I took another necker out to the garage, one without a few hex shaped holes in the handle, and tried to gut my training targets. Every time I tried something else went wrong.
First I pointed the index finger against the blade as suggested, man, that was a retarded idea. After wrapping the tip and pad of my finger up with duct tape, I then went to draw the knife and the loose end of the tape got caught on my shirt. It was like velcro and you'd be surprised at how much you can bleed out of a small cut like that when the tape finally comes loose from your shirt, and the knife really sorta flies out of the sheath and slices your other arm.
So now I was wrapped up in tape on both my left forearm, as well as my right index finger and decided that using a necker from the sheath maybe was not in the cards last evening. Okay, fine, maybe some of that pikal reserve grip stuff, so I went ahead with a stab and slipped on what I think was a little oil. I managed not to stab myself as I fell headfirst, but the knife missed the target. Unfortunately, my fist did not, so I was now sporting a really tender knuckle on my pinky, as well as having dinked the tip of the knife into the concrete.
I got up full of rage and just swung my fist at the wood with the knife. Well, I should have swung the knife at the wood while it was in my fist, because I am now typing one-handed, with a couple sets of stitches in that hand and a soft cast around the stitches for the two broken knuckles.
The folks at the ER asked if I was really an idiot, or was simply going for some sort of social security disability payment for being mentally retarded, because they offered to just go along with it if I'd stop coming in with these dumb-ass injuries.
One guy paused on the way out of the room and looked at me oddly, then asked what kind of knife I was using.
I really could not look him in the eye on this one, so I just sorta mumbled what any internet knife genius would know is a really great necker.

It really does make a great small utility knife, and I wasn;t joking about the lemons and limes. It's handy wearing it as a necker. It's always there to wedge a lemon.

Yea ive definately been warming up to them. its a handy place to put a knife especially if youre wearing board shorts or need to keep your pockets free. i thought it would feel really annoying having one around my neck all day but my bark river necker with handles is actually quite comfortable and about as noticeable as a folder in the pocket.

i tried them , got a few and got rid of them all, why in my experience they are not practical at all,in theory and in the pics they look awesome but when walking with it after a half hour it goes back to the pocket or waist, now i just look at them in the net

If I could carry a neck knife legally then that would be my first choice of carry. Its out of the way and easy to access from any position. I don't like carrying anything else in the pocket I carry my knife in so sometimes I need more pockets and a neck knife would work great but it would be considered a concealed weapon in Michigan even with my Concealed Pistol License that does not cover knives, to bad I miss mine.

I changed my mind and decided that after hearing about all those nice neck knives I would have to get one again and just take my chances with the carry laws here. I ordered a Hinderer Flashpoint yesterday I will have it on Friday. Since I am disabled and spend a lot of time sitting I think it will be better for me than having to try to reach in my pocket of course its somewhat easy to get a folder out but its a bitch to put it back in my pocket using the clip so a neck knife will solve that problem. I just hope if the police find it on me they understand why I carry it the flashpoint only has a 2 3/4'' blade I think so it should not be to dangerous looking.

You are right I just got it today and its sweet. I put a different chain on I use some para cord and take the inside out a feed the chain through and I find this carries better and does not make any noise where it goes through the sheath and it feels better around the neck and it will still break away if you pull hard enough so its safe. This will be my EDC from now on and now my pockets can carry more things and I don't have to worry about scratching my knife handles anymore. Here's a pic for your enjoyment.

I was wondering if somebody was going to mention the chain thru the paracord shell while reading these posts. I tried neck knives a few times knowing the drawbacks of just cord and finding just a chain a little uncomfortable. I bought a HAK and seen the cord over chain thing and tried it, and I now find myself wearing it all the time. I think it's just a good place to carry a small edc or emergency knife that isn't seen and isn't suspected by most.

Fairly recent shot of my neckers:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v399/tradja/IMGP9499.jpg
Clockwise from upper left: Swamp Rat Swamp Warden (love), BRKT Mini Northstar in curly maple (this is the knife I was wearing when I got struck by lightning so it has sentimental value, also added mosaic pins myself), Murray Carter Modified Persian (awesome), Tom Krein Ultimate Caper with green fibermascus (very cool, but selling to feed gun fund), Murray Carter Muteki Wharncliff (now discoed, my CDT thru-hike knife), ECOS Knives (cool cheap beater)
Mostly the same crew. Murray Carter Wharncliff Brute on far right, since traded. Blind Horse Patch Knife on the bottom was certainly a cool, sharp, affordable little thing but has a new home now. Maroon mosaic MNS was my grail knife for years, but when I finally found one it was just unappealingly heavy around the neck and butt heavy in the hand compared to the same knife in maple.
