you will never succeed until you actually look forward to it. good luck
I quit by tapering off, P. How many do you smoke per day?
Pumpkin
11-09-2004, 06:18 PM
Almost a pack of full flavor cowboy killers a day :help:
Try having one per hour on the hour, that should be an immediate reduction then after a couple of weeks, go to one and a half hours and so on. Took me about 4 months to go from 25 Green Death a day to none and no pain.

When I quit smoking a few years ago I did so cold turkey. I took the money I spent on cips and put it in a can. After a year I had enough money to buy a new mountain bike. I ride all the time now and I'm hooked on downhilling!

I failed horribly you guys. :( But I will try again! :-D
Heed my advice, P! You didn't smoke a whole pack the first time you tried them, did you? You didn't go from 0 to 25 the first day, so don't expect to go from 25 to 0 in one day. Taper off.
Pumpkin

I smoked in HS.... started august 00 when I worked at BK... was sleeping about 20hrs a week between a full time job and school and was stressed out....
quit cold turkey in aug 02, couldn't afford to keep smoking. Had been smoking about a pack a week when I got stressed out.
started again in oct 03 due to stress again. captain black sweets. 8 to a pack, 8-12 mini cigars a week... about $50 a month.
quit cold turkey on labour day.
my $50 that i saved in october went towards a 26 of 12yr macallan...
the $600 I'll save a year can buy some great scotch or a couple nice custom knives.
Smoke the full strength ones, P. You get more tar and carbon monoxide with the lites because you smoke more to get the same amount of nicotine. :hityou:

I quit a year ago , my advice cold turkey and just keep trying to quit it will stick eventually and remember once you quit , all it takes is one smoke to start again so don't risk it, good luck and hang in there.

Tis a tough row to hoe......I put the fuckers down on 9 / 12 / 04
picked a target date , smoked up till then and stopped.
I was a real asshole for a while ( yes even more of an asshole than usual ), and I still crave the damn things.
But I am not smoking and I feel a lot better.
I was a deck of red death a day man , and I agree that if you are gonna smoke , smoke.
My last pack was Camel straights as a going away present to my lungs......really !
I keep reminding myself that I don't smoke.....that usually does it when the urge hits.......usually in most enthusiastic terms. i.e. " You don't smoke , you fucking asshole !"
My nicotene serenety prayer.
Best of luck in your efforts !

I have given you the answer to this horrid affair long ago and often since.
Go to www.allencarrseasyway.com/ and pay less than $20 for a 4 hour online course and you will be cured and not even desire them once your done the same day :poke:
I'm tempted to take this course just to see how it works. :decoder:

I'm going on 31 days off em.. Eating plenty of nicorette. Gritting my teeth to manage my attitude before it explodes. As mentioned, reminding yourself over and over "I don't smoke anymore". Drinking gallons of water. My jaw is sore at night from chomping all day.
Any moral support you can get helps. Explain to people that you're quitting and ask them to be tolerant of your mood swings. :dammit:
Hey TBG!
I tried to go to that allen carr site, it comes up not found? Are they still in business?

I just clicked on the link and it worked for me. Try it again and see if it goes through.
I am so confident in this system that when I encounter people in my day to day life that really want to quit, I tell them about that site and even offer to refund their money out of my own pocket if it doesn't work for them. :)
The site works in a way that once you pay your fee, you get a log in and password that works for up to three months. If one person buys it and does the course, they can pass on the log in info and the next person can rewind to section one and do it on the same tab :)

I am going to quit smoking the 6th of June. I once quit for 15 years and then started up again. My health insurance will pay for me to go to a specialist. So, what the heck. If I quit smoking, I can save about $200 a month. I figure June 6th is a heroic date that reeks of courage. If the Allied Forces could take the beaches, I figure that I can quit cigarettes. Maybe.

Outstanding.
My wife quit cold on New Year's Day in, I believe, 2002. I think it was 2002, I don't think she was smoking at our wedding.
She was "unpleasant" for about a month, and today hates to be around cigarette smoke (the Grind-In was just a shock to her system between the dust and the smoke :jdsmokin:)
She ran half a marathon recently and is bitching up a storm because she is currently dinged up and can't train for the marathon she wants to run.
So yeah, those little fuckers are entirely beatable.

I smoked for 56 years off and on. I quit for 6 months once, 16 months another time.
Like a lot of people, I tried the "lights" and "ultra lights" to try and taper off. Intead of smoking less I was smoking three and a half to four packs a day. So I had enough of that noise and tried it cold turkey and about two weeks later, I broke down and bought a pack of Zig-Zag menthol roll your own. That helped me to smoke less, four or five smokes a day. Over the next couple of years, that increased to about a pack and a half of tightly rolled, non-filtered cigaretts a day. This was getting to me health wise.
Then I went for a check-up and as usual, Doc said I needed to give them up. So he wrote an Rx for something called "Chantix". I took it home and put it on the fridge with a magnet. It stayed there for a couple of months until I finally got it filled. You get to keep smoking for the first week (I cheated and smoked for two weeks). The longer I took the pills, the less I craved them. I took the rest of that 30 day supply and had it filled again. That was three years ago this month. I still get a craving some times but it only lasts for a minute or two.
If you really want to quit, Chantix will make it easy for you. If it works on me, it will work for any body.
Lot's of luck!!!
Steve

I don't see what's so difficult.. I've quit hundreds of times..
Jk, it truly is a mental thing. Once you start looking forward to not being labeled as a smoker is what pushed me. However, just stay away from second hand smoke or friends who smoke for a little while. Second hand smoke always made me crave a cig more than anything.
Btw, in my health classes there isn't a difference between lights and ultra lights other than the taste. They have the same amount of nicotine and additives so that you think you're smoking less but you're not and it makes it harder to quit.

I wouldn't usually be so curt, but your advise is juvenile. Living the good life and trying to enjoy the space in between is chock full of choices anathema to the mainstream.
Smoking is a very pleasurable indulgence to particular folks. :ross:

I wouldn't usually be so curt myself, but smoking is a nasty/unhealthy/life limiting habit. There's lots of better stuff to fill the spaces.
No one I've met is sorry they quit...

Well, I was just giving advice into ways that helped me. I wasn't saying it was a strict guideline for him. I was talking about a mental attitude not just thinking that smoking is good. Looking forward to quitting is a more positive way to quit than hating every fucking minute of it because I have seen both roads.
The advice was to help get rid of the habit because they want to, not because I am saying it's a bad habit and it should be stopped, so I am sorry I gave juvenile advice that helped me quit myself.

Smoking. The word has has so many negative connotations a knee jerk is expected.
While i agree it is deplorable to those of a certain kin, others have lived long and enjoyable lives partaking of the plant.
I am speaking of local folks not on the radar. It was the cash crop in this area before the puritan ethos was incorporated.

When I quit for 15 years, I stopped smoking by eating baby carrots. I carried a baggie of them in my coat pocket. Sure, some people thought it strange, but I like carrots and it worked. I was shitting orange for a while, but that is another story.
As for weed, I look it as alcohol. Some can use it and have no problems, others can't. Why punish everyone? Prohibition didn't work and neither do the drug laws. The laws just make for a lucrative criminal business. It is the same where they outlaw tobacco smoking. They just criminalize people for no reason other than showing, that in some cases, the tyranny of the majority wins.

I have gone back and forth with cigarettes, mostly when my pipe tobacco is running low (or I am at a pub and need a quick fix). I'd say try a pipe when you crave. The taste is not comparable, the 2nd smell is not comparable, but you still get all the pleasure of smoking. For me, it's easier on my lungs even, as generally you are not directly inhaling pure smoke.
If you enjoy smoking, don't give it up. Come over to the plasma color TV of smoking...the PIPE!

Zactly what I was going to say!
Its been a month since I inhaled tobacco. I wont call it quitting, but I havent had a cig so far. At night I do the pipe thing but I dont inhale, and at work I use those Snus pouches (mild snuff).
I suggest that if you do take up the pipe to stay away from aromatics. They have added flavor / chemicals and tend to burn your tongue if your not careful.
A burly is what youre gonna want to look for. Here Prince Albert is a good choice, and its inexpensive also.
Good luck!

I have smoked for 25 years . about 2 packs of reds a day . I quit almost a year ago when a family friend who was once a vibrant strong hard working man ,walked up on my sister and I while were smoking and croaked at us to stop. he had Emphesema and spends 300 bucks amonth in meds, cant do the one thing he loved the most , work in his yard.. I had known him for 30 years and it scared the shit out of me. Get through the first four days and then the process is entirely in your head .
