View Full Version : Summer JD Buildoff

So I was thinking after the success of the last competition is it time for another? If like me summer for you is a time to get out in the woods more, have bbqs more and generally using your knives more.
So how about a knife for 'field' use. Call it what you will but I was thinking it's a knife that you take into the woods with you to do any jobs you have from chopping down a Redwood to small bushcraft types tasks. It should also reek of the JD and instantly drop the jaw of anyone that sees it.
Thoughts on this?
Or maybe someone else has an idea for a new competition? Post it here. Maybe i'm jumping the gun a bit here but damn if that last competition didn't raise a hell of an amount of buzz about the place.

Okay, Toddie-
A straightforward utility knife- no bottle openers, no bells or whistles. A clean do-it-all knife. Oh, and get a partner if you cannot make a sheath. A Ka-bar type would be ideal for size and general specs.
Black and red always warm the cockles of my heart, but freedom of expression is always the main point here.
What say you?

How do you like the cardboard for edge retention? I bet you can get a ton of flex out of that, the 90 Degree bend test should be a breeze

Me too. Since it's a field knife and that is what I like/make, it should be pretty painless. I have got my red liners ordered, picked up some nice english walnut and I already have black leather dye and red stitching, so I'm half way there. I was thinking something like this, just a bit bigger and thicker.

watta 'bout blue dress and plaid face paint?...Hmm?Dammit,I ain't gonna be in time for this one...don't have the equipment/facility...and I'd want to do the heat-treat myself, but I ain't set up for it(plus that and I've never done heat-treating before...).All I'm geared up for is light mods,file-work,etc...no equipment to speak of.In time though,in time!

I haven't had much time to work on this , But I did beat on it for a while . got it straightened out. still has a few hammer marks , will polish out . The theme was camp knife / barbeque with a kabar look . I will put on a set of stacked leather handles and a guard . You should be able to cut up your bbq and cut a little wood too . file was 5/16 thick .might even put a hammer looking pommel for driving stakes ?? Bubba

nice design 'Finger:my personal preference (in a camp/bush knife) is a little less forward belly;for those times when you might want the knife to penetrate something. Is that approx. actual size, and what do you have in mind for scale material?

Yep that is actual size, I may clip out the point a bit.
If I can't find a nice dark wood for the handle I will go with black canvas micarta and red liners. Kydex would be the easiest sheath option, but I may do a JD leather like this;

Summer build off... I'm pretty new at this stuff, but when is the completion date?
Got the forge up and running, got a grinder going, and have now discovered that after 3-5 hours of rubbing the stock with a bit of sandpaper, it gets almost shiney as a mirror...
Just got to wrap up a small commissioned blade and I'll get to work on the "Utility" summer buildoff. Cool!
Glad to be here.
Take care. Oh... I see... the 4th of July... works for me since the 1st is Canada Day, up here in the land of ice and snow.
