View Full Version : How Do You Carry?

For all you sheath junkies, what is your preferred method of carry for each type of knife?

I carry a fixed blade daily, most of the time 3" or under in a high ride sheath, weak side carry in cross draw.

For larger blades I go from a mid ride to low depending on what fits the knife best. I havent won myself over about the drop leg sheaths yet. I'm starting to think that way though for a nice custom bowie I have on the way. :devilzide

Folder sheaths have their own place as well, makes them easier to get to and eliminates that awful pocket clip. ;)

Materials, Kydex, cordura, leather? All of the above (yes, I've seen one :chuck: )

Concealed? Open carry? I carry open unless the environment isnt knife friendly or the knife is a bit on the "aggressive" side. Texas, for the most part, is pretty knife friendly. Sea World on the other hand treated me like a thug when they found I had inadvertantly carried my uber deadly people shredding mankilling 1" bladed knife through their pearly gates. I pocket said knife every time I go now just to be a cranky old sort. :girl_devil:

Pictures of your rigs would be sweet! Even Dave Browns pink and purple polka dot sheath is welcome. :kingkaxt:

THANKS!!!!! You Devils are making this the best Sheath Forum on the Intarnet!!!! :leatherdevil :

For small fixed blades, I prefer to carry them in kydex neck sheaths, around my neck. Sometimes I'll take the lanyard off, and carry it in my pocket. I usually carry a larger fixed blade on my hip, in a coat pocket or in my bag. The biggest I will comfortably carry is a 4" blade. I prefer leather sheaths, but have some knives with kydex sheaths, and I just can't afford leather sheaths for them. I have a Bark River Bravo-1, Dozier Wilderness and Harner hunter, all kydex sheaths. They work, but I prefer leather.

i also prefer a high ride hip sheath or a cross draw sheath for smaller fixed blades... i do tend to wear a neck knife from time to time...

After experimenting with different configurations I have settled on the right handed, horizontal cross draw sheath. So it rides on my left hip etc.

This one is done by "Vess" or if you know him Vadim. He is in Toronto and has an eBay store etc. Its crocodlie with a leather back.

Pocket or inside a pack only for me.

Still very much a kydex guy. My KSF pocket sheath has really changed my thinking in regards to Leather.

For everyday use, almost universally kydex IWB, be it a slip rig with no retention or a sheath with retention and an attachment to the belt.

This works for me with blades up to 5 1/2 or 6 inches, and for activities from sitting at my desk to snorkeling in the Gulf of Mexico.

I'm currently searching for a sheath maker for a Corbit tactical folder I recently got. And I was wondering the best method of carrying it. I was considering a clip on a leather sheath so I was curious that you refered to the clip as being clumsy?

Yeah... WELCOME to the JD Ralph. :grinyes:

I like a clip myself, whether it be on the knife, or the sheath. I feel that a clip allows me more carry options and keeps the knife readily available for use. I've given up trying to figure out why some people are so down on clips. It probably has more to do with aesthetics than comfort. Maybe the "purist" in some doesn't like the way a clip looks against the clean lines of the knife... or maybe their scales are made of an expensive material and the owner cannot see covering that with a metal clip.

It is more important to me, that my EDC be more convenient than "pretty". I like for the knife to ride high on the pocket, as opposed to rattling around down in the pocket with keys or something (another knife :)). I might feel differently about the convenience issue if I were to wear a belt on a daily basis, but I don't. I only like clips on a sheath though if it is being carried inside the pocket or inside the waistband.... I feel it would be too easy to fall off and become lost otherwise. :twocents:

Nice. Digging the single contour. I can't stand multiple finger contours, but a well placed single one can really make a knife fit.

As for the OP. I carry a small FB in kydex (der) with paracord or webbing loops on my belt right above the right butt cheek. Inverted or not, depending on the blade.

Also a clipped folder (usually a CRKT M16-12FDZ) and some sort of slippie (usually a Large Schrade Stockman that I've had for going on 20 years)

On-duty I have a neck knife on a beaded chain; today it was a Les Voorhies double edged dagger that Les also included a second sheath and a nifty paracord shoulder rig. Also I had a Jerry Hossom Dogtag in kydex sheath in one of my BDU cargo pockets and usually have a folder, either an AT Barr folding Guardian or a Barry Wood rotating folder - my latest is a MK1. In BDUs my duty belt is nylon, with an H&K USP2000 .40 S&W on the right hip, 26" ASP, pepper spray, cuffs, and a flashlight.

Off-duty lately I've been carrying my 1903M Colt Pocket .380 either in a shoulder holster or in my front pants pocket. I also carry one or two knives including the dogtag and something else...either the pocket colt or one of my 1911s...and two spare magazines...

I carry my MO FOS either horizontal by my appending or in the middle of my back. If I have the FOS in the middle of my back I carry another knife in appendix carry.

Should I be embarrassed if I said that I do not carry? Strange, isn't it, when my life is so involved with knives on a daily basis.

IWB index or SOB, with either Kydex or leather...pistol only off duty. Occasionally a don hume jit slide with the PM9...still hides awesome because of its size.

Heading out on my Trek here, got an Entrek Jag in a kydex IWB rig. It's 440C stainless and unobtrusive. Will not freak anyone in Suburbia out even against a yellow technical t-shirt.

So to edit - an hour and a half later, I had forgotten that the knife was there. A good IWB kydex sheath with a little loop of cord will let that knife ride with you, not against you. Fast access, positive access, but no hassles. About perfect in my view. Hell, the lightweight nylong wallet in my left cargo pocket and the Cliff Cubes in my right were more noticeable.

I love my Spyderco Military and it just became even more awesome when i discovered i could put the knife in the chest pocket of my Carhart overalls AND snap the button closed through the spyderhole, sumbitch ain't never gonna get out of there

Heck, I worked for four years at a place that forbid concealed carry.
Yet somehow I carried a concealed .45 almost every day of that four years.
They also forbid knives over six inches total length. Yet I carried a Harsey
Tactical T-3 by its clip every day of that four years, including the orientation where they told us about the six inch rule.
Then when I started there, my leadman had his top desk drawer full of knives and hones. We got along well!:cheesydevil:

Oh yeah, I DON'T DO SHEATHS.
Clips only, the bigger, the better!
Kershaw JYD II anybody?

Kershaw JYD II,
BIG clip, small knife.

Lone Wolf Harsey Tactical,
Huge Knife, Huge clip.
Thats why it is still my favorite.
